So I posted about my 2007 rancher smoking. Rebuilt the top end not sure if that was the fix or not. It smoked a little at first. Then it smoked a lot. Then none at all? Anyway I noticed that once it warms up it will bog down and shut off. Wait a few minutes, starts right up and after a while will turn off again. I don’t think it is a fuel issues because I rode it for about 20 minutes and it ran great. Then let it idle for about 5–10 minutes and off. Will this thing shut off if it gets too hot. I will probably start with the thermostat and possible temp sensor. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated. Also no lights come on and I forgot to look to see if the fan ever turned on.

Does this have a choke or enrichment feature? I understand Honda started equipping quads with throttle body fuel injection on 2007, but this sounds initially like a faulty choke.

Does your oil hot light ever come on? Is oil light burned out?

Yes I would start with ignition system diagnostics

first clue: fuel pump. second clue: fuel injection does not have chokes :).

I’m not 100% sure about being in the water. I know it was rose hard. I did drain the oil when I was doing the top end and from what I could see it looked very clean at the bottom.
any signs of mud/dirt/water in the bottom of the air box ?.

Light works when I first turn the ignition on. No oil light when it’s stalls

the reason I asked if its been sunk ?, is I see you purchased this, it started to smoke, you did a top end job, now its back to smoking ?, this tells me its been sunk from the person you bought it from, and they sold it off as fast as posb to you !.

Nope. Was dirty which I guess is from riding it but nothing caked in there. Also the stock duct that attaches to the bottom inlet is missing. (Off topic.) but any idea what that piece looks like? One is listed on eBay but looks nothing like the drawing when looking at oem parts.

It runs strong when you ride it, but won’t sit there and idle for too long. I really can’t say if it was sunk or not. It’s definitely a possibility although I really hope not. I just would think I would see a little evidence when I was able to look into the low end. I still have hope. The smoking got better then worse then went away. When I measured the cylinder it was at slightly bigger than recommended specs. I also honed it while it was out. Anyway. The not staying cranked when at idle started after we rebuilt the top end.

When it stalls are the fins very hot like in an overheating condition? Ohms check the oil temp sensor if resistance too high it will never indicate an overheat condition. If normal then you’re left with checking the fuel pump.

You mean the vent line is missing? Fuel vent lines are intended to drain leaking fuel away from the engine. other vent lines needed to help evaporate moisture that collects in the gear drives and such.

Try getting into the manual a little deeper in those three areas

Are you talking about the fins on the radiator? I unfortunately didn’t think about looking to see if the fan was on at any point. Will look at that this weekend. As far as the fuel vents. Will be something I’ll make sure they are open. I did just replace the fuel cap vent when this started. I’ll take that off but can’t imagine it having anything to do with it.
