Hello all. I am attempting to help a neighbour I getting his ATV started. His model is 1993 Honda Fourtrax 300 FW.
His machine has not been started for 5 years. He figures he had run the thing for possibly 15-20 hours grand total when he did use it. My goal is to get it running.
I have the service manual.
So far, I removed and emptied the gas tank. It was very clean from the get go. Charged the battery, now showing 13.3 volts. Inspected the filter in the cup attached to the tank. Clean as a whistle. Emptied and inspected the gas line. All good.
Pulled the plug. It was reasonable with a small amount of carbon. Replaced it anyway. Engine turns over but doesn’t start. Pulled the plug and grounded to engine....no spark. That’s as far as I got. Hoping I can get some help walking through from battery to spark plug. Budget is limited. I am only trying to help a neighbour to get this going so he can realize a better dollar when selling. Thanks in advance for anyone’s help

Ok, great. You've got a copy of the manual, thats gonna speed this diag up for ya a bunch.

The neutral light must be on.
Check the ignition fuse at both ends for voltage using a multimeter or a test light.

The service manual shows which wire color pairs to use during the following continuity tests:

Check the stop switch (the one on the left handlebar) harness connector for corrosion and test that switch for continuity using a multimeter or a test light.
Check the ignition switch connectors and check the switch for continuity in the same manner.
Unplug the stator and pulse generator connectors, inspect the terminals for corrosion and plug them back in.
Unplug the CDI connectors and do the same.
Then test for spark across the spark plug again.
Does it have any spark at all now while cranking the motor over with the starter motor?

If not, tap on the CDI module with a plastic screwdriver handle while cranking. If it begins to spark consistently check those connectors again and replace the CDI if all connections are good.

If it sparks just once when you release the starter button, that indicates that the CDI is bad. Replace it with OEM. China knockoff parts do not work on Hondas.

If still no spark at all get back with us explaining all that you've done, because you may have to test the pulse generator as well.

Welcome to the forums!

if this atv sat that long, I would maybe suggest pulling the carb and cleaning, doesn't take much to cause issue's
could be water in bowel from just condensation over the yrs!

I would also suggest changing the oil for the same reason, same with diff's fluids too!
also inspect the air filter is clean and allowing good air flow!

and have to ask, does the starter spin FAST< as just cause the battery reads 13+ volts, if its been sitting 4-5 yrs, it could have bad cells, and a volt meter will NOT show this, a chain auto parts store can do a load test on battery and ensure its good, and ,I would be doing this, to just rule it out before digging deeper into things, as without GOOD power, your spinning your wheels trying to rule out spark issue/s !

I would be surprised if you can get a five year old battery to hold a charge. I would just go buy a brand new Yuasa–$85.

Everyone’s on a budget, but if you try to run this quad with a bad battery you could burn up the stator.

Also get a can of contact cleaner, a tube of permatex dielectric grease and two plumbers flux brushes. You may have to remove the front fender to get to the CDI. Page 20-4 ignition diagnostics

Post up a pic of this thing and we’ll tell you what we think of it
