Welcome!
You can download the service manual from the link in my sig block.

First thing is to check oil for fuel smell. If the petcock was left open mist likely the fuel drained out of the tank, thru the carb and on the floor or into the engine. Change oil with atv oil — not automotive oil—Honda GN4 is fine.

Is there fuel in the tank? Was the petcock shut off? Drain the fuel and inspect the tank with flashlight. Sometimes you get sediment or goo in there; check to see if petcock has a screen—if so clean it.

Likely you will have to clean and rebuild the carb—unless your Dad “pickled” the atv by draining all the fuel and oil fogging the carb.

Pull off and clean —or replace—the air filter.

Check for mice nests in the air breather assembly

Another thing to consider—since it is an older model—do you know if your Dad ever took it to the shop? If you don’t want to take it on, take it in. Mainly you can use the manual to figure out what the machine needs (inspection schedule) and what you need to perform the task.

Some members here haven’t had the best of luck with their local powersports shops, but I have. I take all my work quads in and got to know the team. They know me and what I want.
