Hi everyone! I just bought a 1991 Honda 300 2WD. According to the guy I bought it from I'm the 3rd owner. It cranked and ran, so I took it!

I just bought a new battery (Walmart brand has always been good for me). I'm trying to figure out what all do do next and would appreciate some advice from the Experts here. I figure change these are the first few good steps:

1. Change the oil and filter. What kind of oil should I use?
2. Replace the spark plug. Recommendations on the type?
3. New air filter. Recommendations on the type?

I need to replace the ignition switch, the PO replaced it with something that wasn't correct. I'm noticing that I'm missing some little odd nuts and bolts here and there. The choke is stuck on full choke. Just some little things here and there.... I hope to fix it up! I appreciate any advice or direction.

Thanks much!!

Welcome sounds like a great rig. You’ll find a link to the 300 series in my sig block.

Also try to only by OEM Parts; link also below . Get to know your local Honda shop techs.

The 88-92 series is Generation 1. You’ll have fun performing the maintenance as long as you have a good set of tools.

Main thing is to get the right oil for ATVs not the same as auto engine oil.

Ensure you install the oil filter correctly installing incorrectly will prevent oil flow.

Be careful setting the valves; very important that the piston is in the right position

I use anti seize compound on every bolt I remove. Try to use a good six point socket on every bolt because a worn 12-point could round off the heads of a corrosion stuck bolt.

I bought a 93 TRX300 in September they are great.

Welcome to the forum and to the 300 club , great choice , it should last you a long time with a little bit of care ------- The choke being stuck could be the plunger inside the carb stuck or the cable frozen , most likely the plunger , also if the choke is stuck on and it runs then the carb must be dirty , I would take the carb off and clean it , you can find a sticky on how to do it , also since the bike sat up , I would take the tank off and clean it out , if it is rusted inside then you need to do something with it

Thanks for the welcome. The last time I cleaned a carb I killed the bike! I'm a little gun shy. :sad

Thanks for the welcome! I've been using Walmart batteries since 1986, they do occasionally die or you may get a lemon, but the return policy is easy!

Thanks for the welcome and advice. I've always been a fan of OEM parts, I didn't know if it was the same with these as well. Sometimes people through trial and error have learned such and such is better for a specific thing.

Good tip on anti-seize. I've got a pretty good tool set, but I've been thinking I need a good set of 6pt sockets. Now I have an excuse! :lol I've watched a couple of videos about the oil filter so I know what you're talking about there, but how do you keep that spring in place while putting the filter in?

That choke being stuck, you’ll find there’s a spring plunger on the carb called a starter valve. If the cable is bad or the oring on the valve is bad, the valve is dirty or spring missing, all can cause sticking.
Whatever you do save all the bits if you do any replacement. The new cable won’t come with that little clip and the plastic threaded pipe starter valve holder breaks easy

1. Honda filters only. Oil just has to meet JASO MA or JASO MA2 requirements (wet clutch), GN4 is pretty much foolproof but there are better oils out there, like synthetics.
2. Spark Plug just replace with same as OEM, should be NGK DPR8EA or DPR7EA something like that. My memory is good but maybe not that good lol.
3. I would use a UNI foam filter, or OEM if you prefer. UNI flows a bit better and it's a bit cheaper usually.

I'll give it a shot if y'all promise to help when I break it! :wink Well, after hunting season is over. I'll stick with it as is since it's running, but in Feb I'll look at it.
