Hey all,

New guy here, just saying hi.

I've got a 1996 Honda Foreman 400 4x4--recently rebored cylinder/replaced piston, rode good for a couple of rides. Then it developed an engine noise that developed into a bad knocking in the engine that gets worse with throttle. While pulling head cover off broke 2 of the 4 bolts holding it on. Also it was smoking badly as well, so I switched top ends with a buddy who has a similar bike...that fixed the smoking, but not the knocking. Makes me think I probably need a valve job and to pull the piston, etc and see what I can find. Maybe something is loose. Think i'm on the right track here? Any feedback appreciated.

1988 Honda 300 4x4--just replaced the swing arm bearings...gotta through back end back on and get er in the mud! :)

Welcome to the forums. Is it a knocking sound or a ticking sound? If it's a ticking sound, the valves probably need adjusting. If it's a knocking sound, there's a good chance the rod bearing is bad. To tell if the rod bearing is bad, pull the jug off and grab the rod and try to move it up an down and see if there's any slack at the big end of the rod. A little side to side slack is normal, but any up and down slack means your rod bearing is bad.
