i have a 98 300 an it keeps blowing one glass 10amp fuse as soon as i attach the last battery cable. so i checked the whole system an everything is fine. after a 4 hour tear down i found a green wire at the back of the bike that plugs into the regulator that keeps blowing the fuse so i cut open the harness an looked at the whole green wire. so today i put the new regulator on an the same thing as soon as i plug in the green wire the fuse blows. but i looked at the green wire from the tail light all the way to the headlights an its not damaged in anyway so what should i try next. or should i just take it to the shop.

thanks

Welcome to the forums. I don't know if it will make any difference, but the Fourtrax 300 is supposed to have 15 amp fuses, both fuses are 15 amp. I bet it will still blow the 15 amp fuses, though.

I would try unplugging the red wire that plugs into the regulator/rectifier. Plug the green wire back in and put a new fuse in and see if it blows. If not, plug the red wire back in see if it blows. I'm guessing it will and I would say the problem is in the red wire. Like Mud stated, the green wire is the ground, so it wouldn't matter if the insulation was gone and rubbing the frame and if it was touching a hot wire, it would blow the fuse before you plug it into the regulator. If it does blow when you plug the red wire in, trace the red wire back to your your key switch and through to your handlebar switch. The problem could also be in your handlebar switch, CDI, or in the bulb socket for the neutral light.

sounds like the rectifier is shorted to ground. get a new one and all your troubles will be solved. I saw one on ebay the other day for like $20

oops I missed that. got me curious now gonna have to go out and look at mine and see how its wired. It seems like it has to be a componet that is shorted to ground cause it cant be a wire!?

i tried unplugin the red an asoon as i put the green in with the red unhooked it blew i put a new fuse in an pluged the red in an it did not blow but asoon as i put the green in it blew
Maybe you have a problem in the tailight socket. I would try unplugging the wires that run to the taillight and then plug the green wire back into the regulator and see if the fuse blows.

ADDED: Nevermind, that wouldn't cause it to blow unless the lights were on.

Try to unplug the big harness plug up by the coil then put a new fuse in and see if it blows

i think from my little bit of research that it might be the altanator or the ignition pluse because they are tied to the regulator through those yellow wires so if they were grounded out they would draw a charge through the regulator

i will try that

I don't think it would be either of those, but I could be wrong. Try unplugging them, one at a time, and plug the green wire back into the regulator and see if it blows the fuse.

I agree. seems like you should be able to use a multimeter and check those two items cause if it is shorted to ground you could check the resistance and if it is shorted there should be no resistance. The coil would be easy cause there are only two wires. The stator on the other hand you really need to know what wires do what! Good luck and let us know what you find out. If you want I could check the resistance on my coil and that would give you a baseline to go by

this is probally a dumb question...and i'm only gonna ask because i've done it a few times..but..by any chance is your battery leads hooked up backwards ??..this will blow a fuse in a heart beat.

You might be on to something Shadetree. I never thought about that, but I've never hooked one up backwards, yet.

Maybe I'm just more careful than you. LOL. I try to be careful around batteries because one of my buddies had one blow up in his face once.
