Just found a 07 400ex with pretty nice plastics and an all around a nice bike for $1000 Has a "fresh" top end rebuild. Said only 2 hours on it. He showed me receipts of everything. Stage 2 hot cam, new Wisco piston. Says he just put almost $500 in it. Well he was out riding and the drain plug fell out and ran it low on oil. he put a new one in and now it's smoking. Not real bad though. What am I looking at here? Think I could get away with a hone and new rings? Or another rebuild? Thank you!

If it was ran low on oil I'd say you've most likely scarred the cylinder and piston. I hate to say you probably should at least tear the top down and have a look

No problem. .. . Let me suggest if you build larger than an 87mm (416) replace the sleeve with an 88mm sleeve. a machine shop will have to do this for you, also replace the head studs with Heavy Duty studs from www.p4quads.com or contact Jeff Snure on FB directly. He has the milling rights to GT Thunder head studs. This is a Cheap reliable insurance for any build. Also replace the cam chain with a CRF450R chain part number 14401-MEB-671 and replace the guides.

$1000 for an '07 seems ridiculously cheap, almost too good to be true IMO.

Go over everything carefully, and make sure you didn't buy a lemon.

Good luck!

Yeah best price i paid for an 07 400ex was 1150 and it didnt need rebuilt. It needed a timing chain but besides that it was solid. Sold it for 2450 also lol. There are deals out there. I would offer dude less for sure. Me and a buddy buy and sell quads all the time. Put the cash in his hand. Keep in mind NO ONE has cash. Your like a king when you show up with actual green money.

Around my area, an '07 needing minor work would fetch closer to 2500$ :eek:hmy:

Guess that's one of the downsides to living in Canada, but hey, there aren't many others!

I'm buying it off a buddy that I road the quad. I'm def doing an over bore and replacing the head studs. I want to make sure this bike runs the way I want it to. Heck when I bought my 300 two years ago it had a new top end never broke in. Said it wouldn't start. I tore into it to find a small electrical problem( disconnected kill switch) and found the piston in backwards! Lol! Going rebuild it and possibly turning it around and selling it for a 450. Think I'll have trouble doing that?
