I currently have a 2002 400ex and I need some advice at what to look at. I have been going through this quad with is new to me used :). I have replaced the brakes and tensioned the chain, but the front end has me stumped. I am getting alot of squeak, that is constant. I can recreate the problem by pushing down on the front end. Im pretty sure its the shocks. My question is, should I buy stock shocks or aftermarket? The price for aftermarket is hideous. Other than the squeak I also have a knocking, that I believe is coming from the ball joints. I cant grab the tie rod and wiggle it which recreates the knocking noise. From what I have read in the manual it says to replace the ball joints. Can I get away with just ball joints or is it recommended to get the set with the tie rod? Any help is much appreciated! Thanks everyone.

Make sure the shock isnt blown. If it is you will see some oil on the shock behind the spring. My 400ex does the same thing now and then. When it does I just give it a little wd-40. If you want to replace the shock get some trx 450r shocks and adjust them to your liking. Its a common mod and not to much $$$.

You can't replce the ball joints you have to buy stock or aftermarket a-arms if you get aftermarket they come with tie rods but no ends, if you can recreate the noise when wiggleing the tie rod might be the rod ends bad, i would re place them first
