found 2 salvageable halves to 300 rearend. I am planning on purchasing new gears and bearings, but clymer manual doesn't give details on proper specs and procedure of adjusting ring & pinion.I would greatly appreciate any advice from someone who has done this before.By the way it is a 1991 fourtrax 300 fw I'm working on.

I have rebuilt several rear ends for a 300 Honda, but I usually just remember which side and how many shims on each side and put them back like they were. I haven't had a problem doing it like this, but I can't guarantee anything. The ones that I have tore apart have usually had one shim on each side of the ring gear or just one on either side or the other. I don't know if this will help you or not since you have the two halves already disassembled. I would try one on each side of the ring gear and twist the pinion and make sure it has a little slack in it. It should move a little, but not a whole lot, but you don't want it to be real tight either.

Thanks for the help. I don't have any shims though. I pulled the whole quad out of a dumpster.Minus the rearend. Everything else is surprisingly in good condition. The guy who threw it away doesn't have rearend. So I got one and can get new ring and pinion good price. Just need info on shim adjustment so I can order correct thickness shims.
