i am running out of options and not sure what to do anymore. i have an 2009 honda rancher 4x4 foot shift model. i have only put about six tanks of gas through it since i bought it. i have developed a really bad grinding noise from the rear end only when you make right hand turns. it does not grind while driving straight or turning left only when you turn sharp to the right. you can hear it and feel it throughout the bike. it has been into three different dealerships now and not one dealership can figure out what is causing the grind. they said the bearing all look ok, the shims are to spec and everything in the rear end looks normal. Is this a normal sound for this model ?or does anyone know what is causing this grinding noise?

if its still under warranty take it out on a long hard ride. it will get worse and maybe they can find it. i know this is not the best way or advice to find the problem but might be what it takes to find it. i got a ten model and it dont grind. if its not under warranty you mite want to do more investigating

does it have disk brakes ?..or drum brakes ?..if drum..pull your brake cover off..and inspect your brake drum..if it's got a grinding noise ..this tells me your drum is rubbing..or maybe the shoes are sticking...if thats not it..then i would say your bearings are bad..yeah yeah..the dealer said they are good..that is..until your warranty runs out..and then they get to charge you for the repairs !

has drum brakes. dealer just called and said that everything in the rear end looks ok except for some small scoring on the gear. they said they tried a different shim washer and that didnt do it. they said since everything looks ok they cant do anymore for me even with the noise

What caused the scoring? If it's rubbing the differential case, it's not normal. The scoring might have been on the ring gear when it was installed in the differential, though. If the back of the ring gear isn't rubbing anything, that wouldn't be a problem.

first off...i hope those pictures are not the way the ring gear was installed ????..that little round thing sitting on the bottom of the ring gear..with alot of punch marks in it...that is the ring gear indacator..as the shims wear..or the ring gear..or pinion gear wears..the ring gear will rub that piece..that is where you got the score marks on your ring gear...the only prblem i see in those pictures is..the ring gear is upside down !!..the flat part ( where the score marks are showing..is suppose to be facing that tab indactor !!..at least thats how all the differentals are that i've rebuilt are. as for those marks being normal..yes..and no..yes..they will show..but this takes awhile..many hours of use...no..it shoudn't happen if your bike is fairly new. this is why they changed the shims..well..at least they said they did..lol.

well my fiance got to see the scoring cause i am stuck at work and she said some of the marks are blue like it got too hot, i know the one dealer forgot to putt diff oil in the rear end
don't know about them not putting oil in it, but..those blueish marks she mentioned..thats normal..they are all like that..from being forged from the factory..this is normal.

Yes, the ring gear is upside down in the picture, but that indicator doesn't look like it's ever rubbed anything to me.

they could have replaced it ??..because from the looks of the score marks on the ring gear..it would have came from either that, or the case..and all the ring gears i've seen..they all had the marks right on that flat side of the ring gear..and that indicator is what scores it into the ring gear. so..i'm betting they changed it out. now..it's posb..that something like a rock..or piece of metal got wedged in between the ring gear and case.

finally got quad back from dealer so i can start tearing into on my own, they did put a fatter shim in it but its really hard to tell if that did anything, i tried loosening the axle nuts and retighten them cause i heard on another forum that that helped with a few of the quads doing same thing, i kept doing test rides and now it seemed the tighter i tighten it the louder the grind got but the looser the nut it was not as bad? tomorrow i am going to order new bearing cause the mechanic told me that he checked the bearing but did not take them completely out and try new ones

ring gear shims aren't right..or your differental bearings are bad...don't care what the dealer mech said...when you loosen those axle nuts.it lets pressure off the ring gear..if the shims were right..it wouldn't do that..now..still could be the bearings though...only way to check that...is to tear into it yourself..and inpsect it.

yea like i said they put a fatter shim in and that helped a little bit, they said they checked the rest of the shims with a feeler gauge or whatever tool they use and said they were to spec, but i think you right shadetree i am going to try all new bearings cause i was talking to the mechanic at work and he said there is no way possible to check a sealed bearing and he said even if it spins and looks fine the smallest scratch or defect in it can cuase it to be bad. so monday i am going to order some new ones and pray to god that is the problem.

i know there are three bearings in the rear end two on the transfer case side and one and the brake drum side and there is one where the drive shaft comes into the transfer case, should i replace all four of those?

the drive shaft bearing..known as the pinion bearing is a pain to get out unless you have the right tools..and there is a needle bearing in the end of the shaft on the pinion bearing that rest inside the case..it's also a pain..worse than the pinion bearing..lol...seeing how your gonna tear it down..your better off doing all of them.
