I have a 1984 trx200 that the starter just spins when you hit the start button. It had been making a little noise when I would start it and I checked out the bearing when one changed the cam chain and it seemed ok but after a few weeks of having it up and running it eventually wore out and now just spins the starter when I hit the button. So I'm pretty sure it is the starter clutch bearing. If so, my question is do I just need to replace the needle bearing or do I need to replace the whole starter clutch or atleast the bearing within the starter clutch? The reason I ask is because I've looked all over and I can only find the starter clutches for 86 and up models and not an 84. You can buy a kit on ebay that replaces the needle bearing and starter clutch bearing and race piece. But I cant find anything for the 84. Will the 86 starter clutch bearing and race work or if not can someone help me find the correct part that will?

Hi, welcome to the forums!

I suspect the starter reduction gear set has gone bad. Broken or chipped off gear teeth most likely. Some of those parts might interchange with the ATC200 models of that era.

You can use Partzilla for parts lookup and parts interchange among other models (click on related fitment after clicking on a part number), but you'll need to take the left side cover off the motor first to learn which parts you'll need to buy. Check the fLeebay or powersportsnation for used, discontinued parts.

You can get a copy of the service manual HERE to aid in disassembly and diagnosis. Have fun and keep us posted...

You are correct, 84 ATC 200es Big Red and 84 TRX 200 share the same motor. I believe there were a lot more of the ATC model made than the TRX so you should be able to find parts for relatively cheap.

retro: I just took that side of the motor off a couple weeks ago to change the cam chain and chain guides as one was cracked and the chain was very loose. I also adjusted the valves and changed the oil and serviced the air filter. The reduction gears seemed fine when I had it apart and there wasnt any metal in the oil. I inspected the gears and didn't find any chips or signs of major wear or damage. Do you think they would have broke when the starter clutch went out?

And ok I will see if that helps find the correct starter clutch. Do you guys know if anyone still makes or carries a new version of the starter clutch or am I going to have to buy a used one?
