Assuming it meets wet clutch criteria, the only choice that really matters is synthetic vs non-synthetic

In addition to the JASO MA or MA2 mentioed above, make sure you are running the right viscosity range for your climate. For example, both conventional Rotella T4 15w40 and synthetic Rotella T6 5w40 are JASO MA, but I strictly run the T6 because 15w40 is way too thick at startup for our MN winters.

And when it comes to name brand....do you think Honda has its own refinery?? nope. they spec it and contract it out and they are choosing the industry available specs that manufacturers are already making it to.

oil brands around here are a touchy topic, kinda like comparing tire brands and winch brands ?!..lol. everyone has their brand name. its not the name that matters ?..IT'S WHATS MADE FOR IT !., you must use a oil made for it, such as any brand designed for , and approved for wet clutches. the reason is, most atvs, motorcycles, all use the same oil to run in the tranny and engine section, unlike a car/truck, where the motor oil is separated by transmission fluid to run the tranny.

to further this topic: regular automotive oil has friction modifiers in it, to help the engines pistons, where is on an atv, the motor oil runs through the clutch disk, where this is when they slip, burn up, and this is a NO NO !.

as long as the oil meets the required spec's
NO ANY brand oil will work just fine

MANY folks feel and notice differences with running higher quality syn oil
things seem to shift smoother, and well, run cooler
if these things Matter to you, then odds are , running a higher name brand oil is a better option for you

if!~
all you care about is replacing old oil with new clean oil, then again, ANY brand oil that meets requirements will be FINE

then your onto the OIL filter game, many ONLY like OEM< many like NAME brands, and some use what ever they find cheapest
THEY all been proven to work, but some provide others with better peace of mind BUYING a "X" brand name one!

you might want to change it when it starts looking dark. Dont wait till it gets so, so, black. black is too much carbon in the oil.
