Manual shift problem

I have a 1999 Honda Rancher 350 manual shift. (no E.S.) It is stuck in 5th gear and will not down shift. After riding recently I stopped and shut off with trans in 2nd gear. Went to use it a short time later. Would not down shift to neutral to start. I rocked the machine back & forth and still would not downshift. Tried shifting up and went into 3rd,4th,then 5th. Still wouldn't down shift. The shifter is tight on the shaft. Awaiting ideas/solutions.
