I am looking at a 98 300ex that has just been rebuilt, new bearings and bushings throughout, and so on. The thing about it is that it has jumped time and the cam chain seems to be shot. Seems weird that someone would do a rebuild and not replace the timing chain. Question is, is that a non-interference motor? When it jumps time is it causing the valves to hit the piston or do you think it is ok? The guy is asking 700 for it. What do you think???

I don't think any ATV uses a non-interference engine, but I could be wrong. The reason I say that is because I've seen just about any kind of ATV that you could think of with a bent valve at one time or another.

Also, I've seen a lot of people rebuild engines without changing the timing chain. When an ATV starts smoking, some people will only replace the piston and rings, trying to get by cheap I guess.

I know my z400 valves wont get into the piston unless it drops one. But anyway what do think should I stay away from it. The guy said you could retime it and it will run fine but it just keeps jumping time. I mean for 6 or 700 bucks I could just part it out right.

If it just keeps jumping time, it probably just needs a new timing chain and maybe tensioner.

I sold my 300ex this summer. Not a lot of parts moving on ebay. In New england 01-02, mint-turn key are going for 1k-1300.
The one you are looking at is old and broken. My BEST offer would be 500. Even if you part it out you still have to take it apart and sit on it till it sells.

I am actually gonna do some tradin on it and I will only have about 250 bucks in it. It is just going to be something for my wife to put around on so I dont have to cart her around on the back of mine anymore!:icon_ lala:
