Hi all I just bought a 92 fourtrax 300fw. the guy i bought it from said last time it was running was on the way to the bottom of a stream. so i brought it home drained the fuel and the oil (choco milk). put in fresh fluids. tried to start it (hit it with some starting fluid) and it fired up. idled rough but ran there was a knocking sound in the top end thought it might have been a valve so i checked them one was good the other was out. Tried to fire it back up, batery is low so i ended up kicking it. Kicked it a few times ( had the normal resistance) and then the kick start seemed to seize up wouldn't budge (hit the decompression valve) nothing. So i jumped it with my car it tuned over, didn't start, but the kick start freed up but now it kicks way too easy, doesn't seem to build any pressure and i can still hear a clicking/knocking sounds as it turns over(in the top end)? any ideas also is there anything that i need to do as i know that this thing died in the water

Sounds like you lost compression. I would just pull it apart and check the damage. That's the only way you will find out.

stuck or bent valve..tear it down..inspect the valves..while your at it..inspect the cam, rockers..piston and rings..you got some damage to the top end.

HI just got the head cover off. the engine is set at top dead center but the cam shaft sprocket is three teeth off from haveing the lines even with the cylinder head/ puch mark at 90degrees, also the timing chain seems really loose(I can pull it UP of the spocket). could the tensioner have failed? Also if the timing was far enough off does the piston come up high enough to hit the valves in these honda fourtrax?

The tensioner could have failed, but more than likely, the timing chain is stretched or both. Yes, it's possible that the piston hit a valve and bent it. I would go ahead and pull the head and check the valves.

checked the tensioner it looks and worked fine the chain must be stretched or the guide is broken (tensioner side) as the tensioner is fully extended and still way too much slack but think it is the chain as it doesn't like to mesh with the whle cam sprocket lol also the inlet valve let air blow by when i blew air into the spark plug hole, thanks for the feedback

timming chain is bad..and your intake valve is bent or stuck..more than likely it's bent from the timming being off..and got struck by the piston.
