2013 420 Trx rancher runs great idles fine. As soon as I put in gear and give throttle it dies. Starts right back up. I have hit and shook all the wires and connections I can see & nothing happens? When lights are on it seems to happen not often than with out but don’t always have to be on for it to die. At a loss???

Is there a good battery in it? If not, put one in it. But if so, check the TP sensor to make sure it isn't broken open. Then either test the fuel pressure with a gauge or replace the fuel filter. If this is a mud bike you'll need to clean and dielectric grease every harness plug on the bike before you do anything else.

sounds like a fuel delivery issue to me.

I don't think so shadetree.. IF it idles & revs fine it can't be fuel! I think it has something to do once he puts it in gear. I see retro mentioned the throttle position sensor. IF it has one, be a good place to start.

Would a neutral safety switch cause this? Not even sure if that quad has one... just typing out loud..... lol

most all Hondas have a neutral light/switch. when I said fuel issue ?, I don't mean none at all ?, it idles, he said so, but !, if he can't get enough fuel pressure ?, or fuel relay is cutting out ( which points to fuel pressure ), then the throttle body can't get enough fuel to rev. as for it dies when put in gear ?, this is an old common problem that goes wayyyyyyyyy back to bad c.d.i's on some models, the old trx350's were very bad about this.

Battery tests good. This machine probably has 250 miles on it. Seriously looks like it was on show room floor. Starts easy and revs up and idles perfect.
What is the full model number of this bike?

Is the battery original? Which method did you use to test the battery?

Are you the original owner or did you just get the bike?

It sounds like it has been in storage... have you flushed out the fuel tank yet?

Try selecting a gear whilst holding the front brake lever in, or starting it up in gear with the brake lever in, this will eliminate the possibility of a neutral switch issue. If it starts or goes into gear it’s fine, if not then the switch is the issue.

So it runs great while not in gear idle and rev it up perfect. I can start it in gear with break pulled I check voltage is how I tested battery I have 11.9 volts and it always starts by 3rd crank. Bad fuel seems like it would be an issue even when not in gear

What happens when you loose the front brake lever, does it just die again?

No it will run just dies when I give it throttle. But it will drive great some times for a while other times I would be lucky to drive 10 feet. Both reverse and drive. Also light on seemed to make the issue worse but it will do it with lights on or off.

The battery is dead... beyond dead! There is not enough in it to run the fuel pump and the ignition. You'll need to replace that battery immediately. Don't run the motor again until you do, else you risk frying the stator or regulator/rectifier. Check the charging voltage while the motor is idling once that battery is replaced. You should see the voltage climb to between 14-14.5 volts with the motor idling.

I just checked I have 11.9 sitting and 13.7 running at idle. That seriously would be to low? I also noticed that the positive screw was loose. I haven’t gotten a chance to run it but I will try a new battery I guess. Hopefully that will be it easy fix!!!

Yeah, that battery is way beyond junk.... that was my 1st question for ya remember? Anyway, it looks like the charging system is still undamaged by it, so you are in luck. Let us know how it goes.

OMG that is exactly what my 2013 Rancher is doing!I changed fuel filter, ethanol free gas in it,put the Berryman injector cleaner in it,just took it for another ride and it’s doing what yours is doing.Mine only has 90 miles on it now.I guess I’ll test the battery.

You're very welcome! Just for the battery knowledge... a fully charged 12 volt battery in good/excellent condition, after sitting for 24 hours after its most recent recharge, will measure 12.8 volts or more on a voltmeter. That same fully dead battery in good/excellent condition will measure 12.2 volts or below. Now you understand why your 11.9 volts battery was beyond dead and beyond being junk.

Keep a smile on and have fun with it! :)
