I just picked up a 1991 250x for my wife to ride. The regular maintenance doesn't seem to have been done in a while. The throttle sticks, the idle is all over the place, the steering is sloppy and pulls to the right, The rear end makes this rubber squeaky noise when moving, the air filter is filthy (easy), and the biggest problem... 3rd gear is out. It's pretty much stock with 450r rims and the tires have lots of life left. I have been riding dirtbikes for years now so many things are easy to figure out, this spring I rebuilt the tranny in my dirtbike because 5th was out. It took longer than I thought it would but it wasn't that bad, so I figure I can can 3rd on this Honda.

I noticed this wheeler has a piston sleeve, I think that is pretty cool. I figured for now I will plan on honing the sleeve with new rings, unless I can upgrade to a bigger bore for cheap??? I'll acid-test the head for leaks and inspect for other problems. I'll also rebuild the carb and look for cooler looking headlights.

My big question is... While I have the engine and tranny apart What are some easy upgrades? Also How can I get the squeaky rear end to quit? and how do I get it to track straight?

Thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forums. Easy upgrades would be bolt-ons filter kit, exhaust, carb. you can pick up a 300ex bigbore kit off ebay for under 3 bens. try dry graphite lube on the swingarm bushings and gear and chain lube on the chain. as far as the tracking make sure you dont have a bent tie rod then just measure the front center of the tire to the center of the other tire and do the same at the backside of the tire and try to get them as close as you can.

Thanks for the reply. I've found some pistons that are 76 mm which i guess is 2 mm over stock. Would this really give me anymore power? How are the high compression 74mm pistons for power? Also has anyone ever painted an engine? When I rebuild I'd like to paint the whole engine. What kind of paint could i use for this?

250x

Welcome to the site. You'll more than likely build this quad up, and then never let your girl ride it cause you'll have too much fun riding this quad!!!! I,m 45 years old 180 lbs,and I love this quad!!! The 250x is very predictable when riding and you can really through this quad around while out on the trails.I have a stock engine with a 12:1 wiesco piston,K&N air filter, jetted 250x carb.Go to Honda parts site and purchase new trans gears that you need, or look on ebay for a used trans - 50 to 100 bucks.Double check your timming chain to see if it's still good, check your valves and rockers for wear.Download a service manual - helps out alot!!!!!!
