Just finished my full restoration on a 02 400ex.

My engine mods are..
416 wiseco 11:1
Sparks cam
Hmf slip on (stock header)
Uni filter (stock air box, no lid)
Secondary oil cooler
04-05 450r carb.

Im familure with jetting 2 strokes Just confused this this particular carb. From what i understand the bigger the bore = smaller jets. That being said

i plugged the hot start with hondabond making sure it went into both ports.

Ran the 04-05 cable

Cut the wires for the tps & heater

Removed the choke

Heated the stock intake and put a tight hose clamp on it.

Installed a 185 main 55pilot and 2.5 turns on the fuel screw.

Starts, idles, revs great. Had a little bit of poping when i let off so i turned the fuel screw to 2.5 (was at 2) created a little bit of smoke but took away the poping.

So the 4 questions im asking are

1 Whats casing the smoke when i adjusted the fuel screw (white)

2 how can i test for a airleak on the hot start? I dont see how it could be. I inspected it after running and the honda bond is all in tact. I just want to rule that out.

3 with the bike warmed up when i apply the choke shouldnt the engine die out? The rpm get higher when i tried. (Air leak?)

4 anyone run a similar setup. I found a few and thats what i based my jetting off of. I know having the stock header is limiting my power. I plan on changing the full exhaust. Can you post your setup and jetting if so?

I know its a annoying subject. That been beaten to death. Theres so much info out there that i cant get a straght answer.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Disregard all of your questions for now, work off the color of your spark plug.

White... Far to hot, needs more fuel..

2.5 on pilot is about right, up the pilot and slow jet gradually and keep checking the plug.

Don't replace the main jet until you've gone at least 4 to 5 jet sizes up in slow or pilot.

Also, see 'plug chop' thread on this forum, it will help a lot :)

No, you should order a selection of jets. There's no saying a 58 will work, every BBK is different.

Have you read through the plug chop thread yet?

Im familiar with a plug chop ive jetted plenty of 2 strokes. Ill read threw the section on here to see if i missed anything. I didnt want to buy a "kit" and confuse things even more. Ive been using genuine Keihin jets. I expected it to run rich with this setup is why im mainly confused and thinking its a air leak.

It's simple to test for an air leak... Get a can of 'easy start' (ethanol) and whilst the motor is running spray around any inlets. If the idle picks up there's a leak, if it doesn't then there's no leak :)
