Hi, my 09 420 Rancher has been experiencing some interesting bad behavior when it shifts up and down. When it shifts up through all 5 gears, each time it shifts it jerks forward pretty aggressively. When it gets warmed up after 30 min of continuous riding it becomes a little more smooth, but still noticeable...any ideas?

Guessing it's the 420AT with IRS (Automatic)?

Synthetic oil will help a little, but those models just don't shift very smoothly.

The early DCT foremans were the same way, and Honda redid the shft map in the computer on the newer ones which apparently drastically smoothed out the shifting, but no way to help it on the older Ranchers.... at least not yet. Maybe someone will design a reflash at some point.

Gear reduction= lower gears in the motor, to turn bigger tires.

Kind of like regearing your rear end in a truck to run bigger tires, but on an ATV you have to change out gears in the engine.

On these early Rancher AT's slapping big tires on them or putting in a gear reduction makes it shift even harsher than stock.

The DCT's just aren't real smooth shifting machines. I'd put some full synthetic oil in and hopefully you can live with it.

I use Rotella T6 5W40. Make sure whatever you put in it has JASO MA or JASO MA2 on the back of the bottle in the little circle.

Im confused by this reply?...Why wouldn't it have GR?
A GR (gear reduction) is a modification available. Mainly used to allow you to fit larger tires.

When a GR is fitted it increases the load/torque through the transmission when shifting gears.
It lowers the final drive ratio basically.
