Well, after all y'all convinced me that I could tackle my 1st upper build, I'm going for it! Everything smooth as silk to start, then broke 2 of the long bolts in the head cover, now, I can't get 2 of the large socket head cap screws out of the actual head, and have stripped one out, so now I'M SCREWED! Unless someone has some suggestions, and by all means, I'm all ears! This is why I'm a carpenter and not a mechanic, lmao!

Are you using metric Allen wrenches?? You may have to tap the next size up in to get them out now.. The kind on a socket with a long handle works great. Slow firm pulls..

This is the fun part!!

You may end up having to drill it out.. sucks but sometimes that's what it takes..

Keep track of broken or damaged bolts.. you'll have to order them when you put it back together

That may work on the one I haven't totally jacked up, but not sure about the one that's totally stripped. And just so ya know, your idea of fun and mine are countries apart buddy! Bahaaaaaaaaaaaaa! I'm a carpenter for a reason! I'll give it a go tomorrow afternoon when I get in and see what happens, just hope I don't mess them up so bad I cant get them out. The one in the back came out, she was in there, but came, the 2 in the front, whew!

Oh I understand that, but I know my limits when it comes to mechanic work and not real familiar with all the tricks. I've learned quite a bit over the years, and one thing that I learned is: if it looks like to much trouble, pay somebody! I know it's really not that big of a deal, but I'm just not "fully" equipped for crap like this and it's just aggravating as can be! I could be shipping my stuff to G & H in the morning, but, "it" happens I suppose, just wish "it" would go play with somebody else for a bit and give this ol boy a break! Wooooooo!

That sounds like a good trick there shade! I'll have to look and see if I have a set, those are pricey, and hardly ever use them, but I may have them, if not, looks like I'll be getting a set! I used my Dewalt impact on some stuff already, and it won't touch em, and the 2 long cover bolts I broke with a box wrench, go figure! I'll definitely be keeping track of everything I break since it has to be replaced in order to get her back together. Does G & H have them by chance? I talked to a fella there today, extremely nice and very informative, and the process is so stinking easy! Can't thank all of you for turning me on to them, greatly appreciated! And more thanks in advance for all the stupid unasked questions yet to come! Lmao!

And shade, if you know of some good places to look for, order and what not for parts, I shure would appreciate it. Fish gave me the Partszilla site, and I'm sure there's tons, but I'm sure you have key vendors you fool with, and for good reason, price, availability, customer service are a few that hit home with me, always, and you've been doing this stuff for years, so I'm sure you have plenty of ammo in the ol bag! Lol

lmao, well bro, I was doing a ton of bizz with partzilla, their prices on most cant be beat for oem Honda parts. but their shipping times really are slow !. rocky mountain atv is another vender I do bizz with, they will even price match partzilla !. bikebandit is another vender, but their prices are not much better than most. cheapcycle is another vender. out of all of these, if you don't mind waiting long for parts ?, partzilla has the cheapest prices, I just wish their shipping times was faster !. ask all the questions you want bro !, we will try our best to answer them. best advice I can give you, is try your best to stay with oem parts from Honda. some things are ok, such as bearings, seal kits ?, I use boss bearings, they are one of our supporting venders here on the site, and I love their products and prices, not one prob out of their products so far, and their shipping is fast !!!.

my bud at my local Honda dealership taught me about the star bits in stripped out allen head bolts. I was rebuilding the fork seals in a 1987 super magna, and the bottom bolt on the shock was allen head, which was stripped out !, aghh, ran down to my bud at Honda, he said watch this, he reaches in his tool box, pulls out a star bit, I say, '' tommy ..that won't fit in that allen head socket '' , he said..your right...BUT IT WILL..!..watch this..he hammers it down into the head, and the tips cut the stripped grooves, locked in tight, then he takes his ratchet, and like nothing was ever wrong, they came right out !. this is where I learned this trick..lol.

being I took numerous hours of classes for welding and spend a lot of time at the machine shop for work and play , I rely on welding a lot for getting out of problems , if all else failed I would weld a nut over or onto the head of the stripped bolt head

another trick that works in some spots is a hammer and chisel , take a sharp chisel and make one hit on the head at an angle that would turn it , then come back with a chisel which the edge has been grinded flat , the first hit gave you a place to get a bite , hammer it and see if you can get a turn going

a tip on Partzilla or any of the parts venders , when making your order , ask what is in stock before ordering , if it is not in stock then get it somewhere else

Good deal fish, sounds great! And yes, I'm an OEM guy, on my F250, boat and everything in some capacity, but like you said, a few minor things here and there are fine, just know which are and aren't is the key. Fish, your a sharp cookie man, I can tell that from reading some of the responses and chatting with ya so far, but the chisel trick, how in the world would that work on something that's torqued 45# plus? I'm not arguing at all brother, you've obviously done it, just trying to figure out the physics of it is all, sounds so simple! And definitely will ask about parts being in stock before ordering, good food for thought. Also, I've either heard of or used most of the sites you listed shade, wasn't sure if all y'all knew something I didn't, and Partszilla was definitely one. I'll get a set of torques bits today while I'm out running the wonderful world today, and have the ol chisel trick to try too! I sure hope this is the worst of the worst, I can handle it if so, just knowing how to get them out now is refreshing, so by this time Thursday morning, I'll be FedExing my head and bucket! Thanks guys, more to come!
