Hey guys. Im working on my new 87 trx250 and I need some help. first off I know this is probably a stupid question but do I need a battery to kick start it and can I use a car battery? Im assuming its a 12v system? Im just trying to see if the engine will even run before I buy a battery. my next problom is at some point some one must of tried to steel this thing because the key ignition is missing.there are four wires that went to it. a heavy red, heavy black, a small green and a small black w/white stripe. Im thinking ill need to do somthing with these wires to complete the circuit before ill be able to kick start it? so any way if any one can give me some advice to help me get this thing to spark that would be great.

Yeah, it will start without a battery using the kick starter. Hook the red and black wires together to enable the ignition. Make sure the black/white wire and the green wire aren't hooked together or touching. It's possible to use an automobile battery until you get one.

My guess is that the carb needs to be cleaned if it's been sitting for a while without being run. Also, if it has any old gas in it, I would drain it out and put new in it. Pull the gas hose off of the tank and make sure gas is flowing out the cut off valve good. There's a screen in there that could be stopped up.

I cleaned the tank and the filter inside it before even attempting to start the engine as well as adding an inline filter. I havnt tried cleaning the carb so ill get on that. thanks for all the help.

while cleaning the carb I discoverd what look like vacume lines maybe fuel lines? acouple of them where broke in half and one was missing. I got some new hose but I cant find where the other end of the missing one goes? I down loaded a honda fsm but it doesnt have these hoses in it.

The only fuel line is the main line running from the fuel tank. There are no vacuum lines. Any lines that are on the bowl of the carb are drain/overflow lines and don't hook to anything, they just hang down. Any lines above the bowl on the carb are just vent lines.
