i am new to this... i have a 1996 trx 300 and i took it apart to put new top end gaskits in and i need to know how to position the piston when i start to time it
Welcome to the forums. Take the two plugs out of the left side cover and turn the flywheel until the "T" mark on the flywheel lines up with the mark on the case. That will be TDC. Make sure the lobes on the cam are facing down when you time it and that will insure that it's on the compression stroke, as the position of the cam is what determines which stroke it's on when on TDC. Don't forget to retract the arm on the timing chain tensioner before reinstalling it.
