Hello guys,
I'm new to this forum. About 2 weeks ago I bought a 86 Honda fourtrax, for the most part it's in great shape. I ordered new pads for it and hope to replace them this weekend. The couple of things that are wrong are minor. One thing is after it gets warm it idles very fast? One more thing, I noticed that the bead of the tires(all four) ride very close to the top of the rim?? I checked and it has the correct tires on it. Now the last concern is that the gears change hard once it gets hot? Would there be some kind of adjustment for this? I appreciate any help.

Welcome to the forums. Which model is it, the 200SX, TRX250, or TRX350?

Carb probably needs cleaning. Also, check your air filter.

Do you have a picture of this?

There should be a clutch free play adjustment on the right side of the crankcase. It will be an adjusting screw with a locknut. To adjust, loosen the locknut and slowly turn the adjusting screw counterclockwise until you feel resistance. Now, turn the adjusting screw clockwise 1/4 turn. Lastly, hold the adjusting screw while you tighten down the locknut.

If it's a 250, I don't think it's officially a Fourtrax, even if the model is TRX250. It doesn't really matter, it's just if you say an 86 fourtrax then people are going to think it's a 350 and might not tell you the right information when trying to help you.

I thought the only fourtrax in 86 was a 350, the first year of the 4x4 atv.
No, they made the Fourtrax 250 from 1985-1987. They also made a Fourtrax 200SX from 1986-1988, I believe were the years for it. The Fourtrax 350 was the first 4wd model, the Fourtrax 200SX and Fourtrax 250 were 2wd models. The Fourtax 200SX was a chain driven model.

OK then. I guess the 350 if officially called Fourtrax 4x4
Yeah, they are all called Fourtrax, which can really be confusing.

Even the sport quads were called Fourtrax, until some point a few years back, then they renamed them Sportrax and they still carry the TRX prefix which I guess means Fourtrax or Sportrax now.

Yeah, that's in great shape. Usually, those models have every fender on them cracked. Those fenders crack really easy, especially if it's cold out.
