I don't have any 420s , pretty sure they are all made the same , on my 450s an 300s only one side has a retainer ring , so it only comes apart on one side ----- I don't know why you are taking it a apart , maybe change a boot , clean it out and regrease , but any ways , I have found it easier and better to just get a new axle , they are cheap enough now days , I have been using Sixity axles , they come in two qualities , I have been buying the better ones , have never broke one yet and have about 3 years on the first 450 axles I bought , and I ride a lot in nasty stuff

Not sure I am following what you are trying to do but I think you are asking about taking the cv joint apart?
Most of them do have a snap ring inside the cup that you have to take out then the cup will slide off. But I have seen a couple of 420 axles that there is a ring staked in place and no way to get them apart. I haven't worked on a 2018 so not sure what you have. But the one axle I came across that had the staked in ring in it that I couldn't get apart was on a 2011 with IRS

you have to if want to put an outer boot on
noooooooo..you do not !. the outer end does not come apart. the inner joint does. soooooooooo..you break the axle down starting from the inner joint, once thats apart, you remove the outer boot bands, remove the bad boot by sliding it off towards the inner joint end. once its off, you reverse the process, slide new boot on from the inner end, over the cv joint on the outer end, bands, then install small bands on the inner boot, slide boot on, assemble inner joint, install inner bands..walla !.
