I believe water is getting into my airbox through the lid when crossing deep water. I have a snorkel and differentials vented as well as the carb vented to the snorkel.

Using RTV gasket maker is it possible to still be able to open the airbox or do you need to break it apart each time? Im not sure if im supposed to apply it then stick it closed while wet, or apply it to the lid and the airbox let each dry then compress them closed? Any help appreciated.

I would use 100% silicone and run a bead around the edge/bottom of the lid where the gasket is and let it dry completely. Then, just put the lid back on. Don't make the bead too big or you won't be able to fasten the lid down. You should be able to take it on and off, this way, without breaking it loose every time. Hopefully you can get the lid closed all the way like this, but if it doesn't work, you will have to put the lid on while it's wet. If you have to put the lid on while it's wet, you will have to have new silicone every time you remove the air box lid.

Try not to use an excessive amount of silicone, because it might break off and get in your carb. Also, make sure water isn't getting in from the drain tube in the bottom of the air box.

Might be able to find some neoprene or other gasket material at a Lowes or Home Depot and make a proper gasket. If you use silicone and make a bead, you'd better make sure the bead is the exact same size all the way around or water will seep in through the thinner spots.

What's this about venting the diff's?

The diffs have vent hoses running from them, too, and most people run them up high with the snorkels to keep water out of them.

This is true. Make sure the bead is a uniform size all the way around.

I would put the lid on and then silicone the lid to the box with a liberal amount of silicone. That way when it is time to clean the air filter you can cut the silicone with a razor and remove the lid. Also make sure the lid and box are clean so the silicone will stick. The best silicone you can buy is Lexel and you can get it at most harware stores.

What about Oring lube for the top seal will it help keep water out? Basically its like putting Dilectric grease on all electrical connections, instead of using silicone to make a new gasket its a whole lot easier to clean off and the air box lid should remove with no problems
