i have a 99 trx400ex that has stock a-arms, swing arms, and rear axle and want to upgrade but have lots of questions.........

how long of a swing arm should i have and how does length affect the ride??
how wide should a-arms and rear axle be and how does that affect the ride?? also i have heard you want the same width in the front and in the rear but is that right?? stock the front is wider than the rear but by how much?? what is the diff between sport, short and long travel a-arms??

I know lots of questions im sry, but basicly what happens when you......

1)make the front wider
2)make the front + forward
3)sport,short,and long travel...whats the diff??
4)make the rear wider
5)add length to the swing arm

once again sry so many questions but adding all these aftermarket parts gets expensive and i just would like to know what im buying and what its going to do becasue this is all new to me and i dont want to be wasting my money

Well I hope I can help you out. When you make the front wider you add stability. Now with long travel a arms you will have a different suspension feeling when going through the arc. When you have a arms that are moved forward you add to your wheelbase giving you straight line stability and you keep the frontend down easier.Sport a arms are what you have.Short travel will rebound quicker and long travel are going to give you a smoother ride on a bumpier surface.Making the rear wider is also going to give you more stability in turns.A longer swingarm is just like a arm that is forward. It adds straightline stability and keeps the front wheels on the ground.I would get +2 +1 a arms in standard travel and a +4 axle. Now you only need a longer swinarm if your hillclimbing or dragracing.Buyt if you really think you need it go no more than +2.Good luck.Hope this helped.

Long Travel vs Standard Travel. Standard travel use stock length shocks and retains wheels travel specs close to stock. You can get +2 (which is 2" wider per side) and still use your stock shocks or stock length shocks.

Long Travel uses shock that is longer than stock. The bottom shock mount(the one on the a arm) is moved out towards the wheel. This changes the geometry of your front end and gives you usually an additional 3-5" of wheel travel.

Get the standard travel and the 450 shocks should work.
