How many miles is too many for you to buy a honda atv?

Just got a 2001 Foreman 450ES (another one) with ~9500 miles and 15k hours. I don't think the hours are all running hours. Maybe the key was left on while it was on a trickle charger, for a year or so...

It is in really good shape for the mileage at any rate. Paid $1k.

leaving the key on shouldn;t count hours, or I don't think so, and as for hours, I think that is very possible, pending how it was used, that's 1.5 mph average
for a machine that gets a lot of farm use when it is driven a few feet yards and left running while you do things and repeat over and over, or just a person that likes to let them idle a LOT
mine doesn't have that many hours or miles, but my average speed is about 2 mph for hrs/miles I have on it!
a lot of folks use ATV's as tools and not toys

that said, that IS a TON of hours I would think a compression test is in order here to just see where its at
nothing on these cannot be fixed or replaced so, if your a MR Fix IT type, it sounds like a good deal for a grand if rest is in good shape!

You see lots for sale over here at independent dealers with 20k or 30k miles on them, still advertised as in good condition. It's basically a motorcycle engine, and Honda bike engines can really rack the miles up over here.

I bought my Grizzly 450 brand new from the dealer, a 2011 model in 2012, with 0.5 miles on it and 40+ hours. Key had been left on by accident they said. And I have confirmed in the meantime, and my Rancher does the same.

I remember reading a high mileage Rancher thread Manny shared and I bookmarked it:

https://www.hondaatvforums.net/foru...ou-think-you-have-high-mileage-honda-atv.html

I searched for other posts like that at one time and found many Honda ATVs with even higher miles still running perfectly. It boils down to how the bike is treated and maintained throughout its useful life.

Thanks Manny, great reads...
Exactly, and a lot of them over here are working tools so serviced regularly at the dealers.

I see them often with over 10k miles. it all boils down to keeping non ethanol fuel in them, routine valve adjustments - and good clean oil in them.

ive worked on more wheelers with 1000-3000 miles due to non use then I have with 10k+ miles wheelers because they are ran everyday.

it was fun to read back on that thread I made. ive bought several ranchers with more miles then that one since then.

This one has a new front end (Bushings, boots, tie rod ends, and such) and new tires. Rides pretty tight. The frame still has paint on the bottom (usually worn off by tall grass in Oklahoma). It will need a carb rebuild and a new spark plug. Interesting to think that a spark plug in a single cylinder with ~9500 miles is like a V8 spark plug with 80k miles.

Thanks for all the input gents.

There were a bunch of Honda ATV tour machines on British Columbia Kijiji .... 2013 & 2014.
One had 36,000 kilometers / 22,360 miles.
These fleet machines are high mileage with lower hours. Used on logging roads, with a tour guide.
Dealer maintained with service records.
They all looked good, with good plastics.
