I am going to be doing mostly woods riding maybe an occasional trip into the track. The question is how useful is reverse and would I be at a loss without it. I can buy a really nice, freshly rebuilt 2000 400ex for 1500 or a 2005 with very low hours for 2500 and I'm trying to decide if reverse is worth 1000 bucks or not.

I really like reverse, but I've never owned one without reverse. On a track, you wouldn't need it, but in the woods it's pretty handy. I think mud and Tom has the 400EX. I don't really know who else has them, but I'm sure there's a lot of people on here with them. I don't know if their's has reverse or not. Let's see what they have to say.

it depends on what kind of trail riding your going to do, if its famailer trails then i doubt you will need it but if go on trails you dont know like i do [ going down a trail iv never been on] then reverse will come in handy, i use mine at least 5 times or more every ride

thanks guys, spinning around is always an option but I like to try to ride up things that a 400ex shouldn't be riding up. I get stuck often no matter what I am riding so I guess I should spring and get reverse. ( or a 4x4 haha)

Good luck. Hope you get a good one. That sounds like a good deal if it's in good condition. For that price, you can afford to buy a new set of tires and it would still be a good deal.

heres the ad for my bike, we agreed on $2300. I am meeting him tomorrow after work. I'm still a little hesitant being that I have never seen or heard this bike run in person. He may be one angry kid tomorrow if I see this bike and it has a handful of problems haha. He seemed like a knowledgeable guy who knew what he had, only downfall is he doesn't have a title; he bought it used and didn't get one. So I'll have to write a bill of sale.

here she is, what do you all think?

thanks its been a long couple weeks looking for a bike. You'd be surprised how many people sell junk or have insanely high expectations for their bikes. I really wanted an 05+ and this will leave me a few dollars in my pocket to fix what I need too. Most importantly it has the original top end so I can be the one to rebuild it. That alone was a deal breaker, I want to be the idiot tearing into my motor, no one else!!! I guess we will see tomorrow how it is in person, keep your fingers crossed that it checks out ok!!!

Yeah, I trade a lot and most people will tell you they are in real good condition. Half the time, they will be junk. That one looks pretty good, though, but pictures can fool you sometimes. Just check it out good when you get there. Make sure you listen to the engine good and make sure it doesn't smoke or knock. Check all your bearings good, also and good luck.

well for my reverse in a quad is a deal breaker. when I look at a new sport quad which I have been I always ask if it has reverse, cause my 250ex has reverse on it and i love it i don't usually need to use it in the summer when i ride but if i ride in the winter and get stuck i can usually put it in reverse and back my way out of trouble and save myself some trouble. so I think that I would spring for the reverse.

well he lives an hour+ away so we are meeting half way, and its funny cause I have called 3 people out on that exact subject. I get there and the bike is running or its smoking hot. He won't be able to do that tomorrow and I am taking my buddy who is an MX engine genius. So we will see tomorrow how it looks, I am optimistic.

He might have it running in the back of his truck and then stop and shut it off, before he meets you. LOL. Not everyone will try to cheat you, though. There's still a few honest people left. Probably not many, but a few. Feel of the motor when you get there and you will know if he did that, though. If he did, you will know something is up, because it would have had time to cool down by the time he got there. Good ideal taking someone with you that knows a lot about engines. Again, I wish you the best of luck.
