Was out riding today, 02 400ex, bored to 416 i think it is, with a hot cams s2. I started hearing a loud ticking and a few minutes later seized up completely, wouldn't turn over or anything. Get home, rip it apart and I was very surprised to see what I saw.

The 2 bolts that hold the timing gear to the cam had came out, one was jammed in the gear and the chain. What would have caused this?

Sometimes they will back out if you don't use locktite on the bolts.

Yeah, they probably did that when they were coming loose and the sprocket wallowed them out. I would say getting hung between the timing chain and sprocket, like in the first picture didn't help either. They probably didn't come out all at once, the sprocket probably wallowed the threads off them.

I didn't do this build, I bought it built. I use locktite on EVERYTHING, if its not locktite, its antiseize.

Have you guys taken the cam sprocket flange off the cam? I cant seem to get it off. It looks like I can buy a new sprocket, bolts and flange and call it a day. I ripped it down completely and didn't see any damage and didn't find any. No metal go anywhere besides the top end, small little slivers mostly on the chain runners.

OUCH!! make sure you drain the oil too I suggest leaving the drain plug out and dumping about a half a gallon of hyd oil through the engine. It's thin enough it will wash out the guts.
