Make sure your pipe isn't leaking where it bolts to the head. A leak there or a crack in the pipe will make them backfire or pop.

There isn't one where it bolts, but about six inches out I spotted a small leak. I asked my dad if he could weld a small patch there, but he said after it breaks in it would probably go away
I had a pipe crack in the bend where it comes out of the head and curves back around and it would backfire when I let off the gas or when the engine was holding it back down a hill, it would pop.

Yeah fix the leak.I just went through this with my 250.A small leak will make her pop.But you could also be a little rich.It will load the pipe up with fuel and cause it to explode as a compression would in the cylinder and it back fires.

My plug is still white, but I just read in one thread today to change the spark plug after messing around with the carb. I'm still running the same plug...

You had issues if it got that hot buddy. I have my pipe header wrapped it gets hot but I can touch it without it scorching me.
