Hello I am new to forum I have a 2004 400at rancher with shift motor lock error. The shift motor input shaft keeps getting stuck at the high side all the way counterclockwise takes little effort to free up but my angle sensor shaft is only moving 30 degrees which doesn’t seem right considering the fact that I have to turn the shaft 90 degrees to see the swing from 0-1.7 on resistance test. I’m thinking I have some trouble inside trans? Taking around 20 revolutions from stop to stop on shifter input shaft and bike is in first all the way clockwise but then in limp mode. Any input appreciated Thx

Welcome aboard. X2 to go through every related step for the hondamatic. Take good record of what it does for each section, and report back. There are just a few 400AT regulars left here, but lots of other smart guys that can assist even though they don't personally have one.

I have a manual and went through the steps and all checked out ending with it saying ecu was bad but never did it reference the movement of the angle sensor shaft in response to the input shaft for shift motor I know there should be movement there but how much? Seems like my 30 degrees of movement isn’t enough to satisfy the angle sensor. Thx

I'll see if I can dig up anything on the angle sensor tomorrow when I have a full computer screen available.

Thx really wanted to be sure before tearing it apart
I didn't see as much specific info about angle range of motion as I had hoped. And I'm assuming you went through this section:

Mileage is almost 3000 and yes I did go through that section motor is working fine it just gets jammed up at the high side I’m guessing because it’s not being told to stop by either angle sensor or ecm. Thx

I’ll take a stab at the angle sensor again when I can to determine when it starts to change from 0 on its way up to 1.7 and judge the degrees of swing just seems like it’s not moving nearly enough to send proper information.

I'm a little stumped on this one. Where are you located? I do have a spare ECM that could be used for diagnostic purposes (I won't sell it outright though)....

Thanks for the responses the motor is good if I put it all back together with the shift motor shaft spun all the way clockwise to the low gear then do the initializing process it spins the shaft counterclockwise till it locks up in high. I have not gotten a chance to check out that angle sensor again maybe today and I am near Port Huron mi thx

Well joeyglvr may have saved the day from 2012 how to fix a angle sensor I went back just now and rechecked the resistance and numbers were all wrong even though they were fine couple days ago so I decided to tear the angle sensor apart per his tutorial and put it back together and all is working again in barn first gear but it accepted the initializing as it should and it’s not stuck in high gear so thx Joey and everyone else for the input

Thanks for circling back! Not sure any of us actually "helped" other than give you a place to process all this, which led to you figuring it out. Happy riding!
