I need to know what kind of oil to put in the front drive shaft box(FW drive shaft). I put 80-90 oil in it like the front and rear drive boxes but I know that's not right. I cannot find anywhere what type of oil it takes. PLEASE help.

Thanks for the info. I was given wrong info from the local Honda shop apparently. I will see if I can find the right oil and change it out.

Thanks

Mike
You're welcome. Honda GN4 is the same oil that goes in the crankcase.

ummm..helmut..i could be wrong here..buttttttt..if he's reffering to the front gear case...< right in front of the engine >..this has a transfer gear in it...and right on the case it states 80w gear oil..this is not the same as the crank case oil..it uses the same oil as the front differental and rear differental..80w-90..the honda dealer ship told him right...only part of the engine that uses 10w-40 is the crank case..and that it needs to be for atv's with wet clutches..i've worked on alot of these bikes with this set up..and it's stamped right on the gear case it reads 80w gear oil...if the bike he's talking about is what i'm thinking..it does have two transfer gears inside a smaller case right in front of the engine in it's own little set up..then it goes to the front differental drive box gears...i'm pretty sure it's got 80w hybrid gear oil stamped on the case..should be right by the oil cap.

Well, I'm just going by what the Honda Repair Manual lists for it. This is from a 1995-2000 Honda TRX300 Fourtrax 4X4 Repair Manual and it is the Honda brand manual. Look at the main bottom where it says Front Gear Case. Maybe they made a mistake in the repair manual, because I have always used gear oil in the transfer case, also. I just looked this up when he asked for the specs, but if it says 80W gear oil on the case, then, that is what I would put in it.

beats me..all i know is..the transfer case on the bikes i've worked on had 80w stamped on it..maybe they changed it on the later models ?. i always went by what was on the transfer case..kinda makes ya wonder why they put two different kinds..one in the manual..and other on the case ?..your guess is as good as mine...i would run 80w in it if it were mine..those gears go under alot of stress, this is my choice..what ever you want to put in it..is up to you.

Thanks for all the help. Now I am still confused as to what goes in it! This "gear box" is located on the front driver side of the 4-wheeler. The box is connected to the front gear box via front drive shaft. I didn't see any marking on the box itself as to what goes in it BUT I will give it a good shine and look it over good. I know the oil that was in it was not 80-90 W because it was too thin. What harm would come from puttin 80-90W in it if it is not needed?

Thanks

Well, I know what you mean by being confused. Actually, I don't think it would hurt it to put 80-90W gear oil in it, because I've run it in the transfer case and didn't have any problems. On the other hand, I think GN4 oil would be OK, too, because the engine crankcase has gears in it and the transfer case just has gears, also. So, I can't see much difference. I would say the main thing is to keep it changed and clean. I guess this still doesn't help much, but that's about all I know to tell you. I've always put gear oil in them, because I hadn't looked it up in the repair manual, until you were asking about it.

won't hurt it one bit if you keep putting 80w-90 in it, 80w will just stand up to more heat and friction than 10w-40, me..i'd run 80w..but..it's really up to you.if you look somewhere on the case...should be near the fill cap, you will see 80w hybroid..or something like that stamped on the case...should be !..don't qoute me on this..all the bikes i've worked on had it stamped on it there.

I know this is a very old post but I am wondering if anybody ever came up with the right answer as I just bought an old 1999 Honda fourtrax 300FW and am caught in the same delema. My manual says 10W-40 and the dealer gave me 80W-90 to put into the front and rear diff and also in the front gear case.I assume that the front gear case is also called the transfer case,am I correct?

the case right in front of the motor is your transfer case...the case that sit's all the way in the front is called your front differental...i really don't think it matters what oil you run or put in your transfer case..either 10w-30..10w-40...orrrrrr..you can safely run 80w-90 in the transfer gears. it makes no difference in the transfer case...as there is no clutch to worry about getting a friction modiifier to it ?..sooo..if you want..add any of the oil i mentioned. i run the 80w-90 gear oil in any trx300's i service..as there is only two gears and bearings inside this case..and they are always under alot of stress..this is why i use 80w-90 gear oil in the transfer case.
