So just bought my boy a new 2017 honda250x, he had an lt80 but had issues with it and was tired of dealing it with it, but was curious what i could do to just open this thing up, i know its not a performance quad but will be a good quad for him for the next couple years and he can step up into the big boy bikes. He is 11 and about 80lbs and loves it so far but just want it unplugged, i own a trx450er but this motor and bike im not familiar with yet. New to this forums, i check in time to time on the TRX450.org forums. So all the insight and suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Hello,

Welcome to the forums!

As far as mods for the carbed & shaft drive 250X, you'd probably have to scrounge around to see what is available from the aftermarket. The CDI on those machines limit RPMs to a low peak for reliability (and Ricks doesn't offer a No-Limit CDI for it), so you'll probably be limited to very small increases in torque through basic intake & exhaust mods. Modding for performance may not be very cost-effective unless you got a fat wallet and can afford to bring the compression ratio up and have a camshaft custom ground for it, along with a bigger carb & exhaust and a custom CDI install, etc.

Have fun with it!

Well, it is a 2017... an entry level mid-size machine built for long term reliability, not designed for racing. The aftermarket may not pay much attention to it... or offer very few basic mods for a while.

Scrounge around and find what is available for it, earlier motors were similar so there may be something out there by now. I imagine basic mods will be pricey though, simply because the ignition is rev-limited low... so markets will probably be small until someone mods a CDI for it.

Being that it is a carbed motor puts the odds more in your favor for aftermarket interest, due to fewer electronic controls being on the motor, that serve to lock everyone out of cheap and easy modding. Those electronic prisons get more restrictive every year.....

I don't really wanna modify much I just wanna open it up, like exhaust, intake. I mean like a Cdi box would be nice cause seems like it doesn't rev worth crap like you said. I didn't wanna put him on a 400ex at his age and I didn't wanna steer away from honda.

I don't know about interchanging exhausts... you can check both year models on Partzilla for part numbers, see if they match. You've found quite a few items for that bike already! Before you buy anything, find out where it is made. If china, expect poor china quality and uselessness... If Japan, North America or Europe, expect better quality and something that might actually work! :)
