Hi could somebody help me please I am
New to this forum have just bough a Honda trx 500 trx. I did a oil change yesterday and have now got an oil leak coming from front of gearbox where the shaft comes out. I have attached photos sorry for my poor description I am not sure of the name of location or part. I’m not bad with engines as I run a few generators and am always maintaining/fixing etc. If someone could please give me advice. Thank you very much in advance.

Jenson

I would suggest posting the VIN number here and someone will likely be able to decode it in terms of model, etc., or just take that number into a local Honda dealer and they will surely know. Once you know, go here and down load the service manual, https://www.hondaatvforums.net/foru...nual-help/50817-service-manual-downloads.html

Related to this topic, you did you a wet clutch approved oil???

well, first off , we need to know what you REALLY have ??..we can't link parts, and tell you how to go about changing it out..UNTIL YOU HAVE THE CORRECT PART ?!. if and when you find out, and tell us what your atv is ?, then we can tell you where and what to get, then, all you need to do is unbolt the front diff, slide it all forward, remove the front collar from the front of the output shaft where it is leaking, CAREFULLY pry the old oil seal out, grease new oil seal, CAREFULLY tap new oil seal back down around the output shaft, then put it all back together. post a pic of what you have, as well as the vin number. vin number will be under the front fender, middle ways, stamped on a metal bracket across the frame tubes just behind the front grill :).

and the vin number will be 17 digits :). read left to right, count the 10th digit, that will tell us what year model you have.

The vin number is there anywhere else it will be apart from the front of the chassis? The front end was non existent I have had to rebuild it. Will it be on engine? Or anywhere?
no, the factory vin number will be where I said, if there is no vin number ?, well..your chances of being in possession of a stolen atv is very high !. WHICH WOULD EXPLAIN WHY THE SELLER SOLD YOU A MODEL THAT DOES NOT EXSIST !..LOL.

I agree there is a certain likelihood you are in possession of a stolen atv. But there is also a chance it was just front end damaged and somebody had it apart before deciding to sell it. It doesn't make much difference to me from where I sit, and you just know you have a 500cc 4wd Honda with a front drive shaft seal you need to replace. Shadetree gave good general info above on how to do it, and the process is basically the same regardless of which exact year and model you have.

So post up a bunch of pics from all sides and angles of the atv, and we can let you know what model and year range it is. That's what you'll need to know which service manual to use.

Calm down guys.

If the OP's bike is pictured in his avatar it has a winch so the winch plate is probably covering up the vin.

Jenson, look in the right rear wheel well and see if there is a sticker on the frame.

Also let us know if it's a footshift or ES (electric shift on the left handlebar) or automatic (shifter on left side of gas tank).

From the picture in Jenson's avatar it's an 05-11 Foreman or an 05-14 Rubicon, so it will be one of two possible seals.

Installation will be the same for either model, which is to unbolt the front differential (three bolts) and pull it as far forward as you can so you can get the driveshaft out, then use a pick and pull the old seal out, and then drive the new seal in place and put the driveshaft and front diff back.

Yeah no 2010 models, but previous owner might have bought a leftover 09 in 2010 and not realized it wasn't a 2010.

But you definitely can't see the vin on the 05-11/ 05-14 500's if you have a winch plate on the bike.

you can't see any vin numbers on any models if they have a winch plate installed ?, as everyone covers them up.

Good point on the winch plate. And a few pics from the OP and we can tell him exactly what he has. I was didn't bother saying either Foreman 500 or Rubicon before cause you can't tell from his original pics, but a couple different angle and we'll be able to easily.

Hi. The quad is not stolen. I do I trust the farmer who I bought it from as he only lives 5 mins around the corner from me. He bought the quad new from a Honda dealer and is trying to dig out the paperwork/receipt. He only ever knew the quad was a 2010 Honda trx 500 fm 4x4 he did give me details for the manual what states this model? I’ll add the link at the bottom of this post. My quad does say foreman on the front light if that helps? And I’m sorry but I dont have the seriel number I am afraid I think I cut it off and replaced/strengthened that piece up before I fit the winch plate as it was mangled (wish I had took a photo) ?

unless your in Canada ??..everywhere I looked, says NO 2010 trx500fm was ever made. i'd bet it is a 2009 model, as that was the last year they made the trx500fm air cooled. just because he/she showed you that paper work ^^ ?, still does not add up !. no such thing as a 2010 trx500fm.

Could you tell if I took some photos?
Yes. That's why in both my prior posts in this thread I asked if you could post more pictures. We can help you with more information given. Pics = information.

And where are you located? Cause that link you posted above is an australian link. Just cause Honda didn't have a 2010 TRX500FM in the USA doesn't mean it was non-existent. Honda and all the other companies do things different in other countries all the time with different model offering strategies.
