Hi, I’m new to the forums here because I’m just about out of ideas about what could be wrong with my atv.

It’s an early 90s Honda TRX 300 4x4. I cant remember the exact year but I’m only the second owner. Two years ago it started to run bad and I figured it was the carburetor but never got back around to fixing it until this year due to a multitude of reasons. Before it started to run bad it ran like a champ. When it started running bad it would back fire when throttled in idle, and also back fire while driving but after so long now it won’t start. So far I’ve replaced the battery, spark plug, and ignition coil. I’ve also checked the fuel line and I’m getting a good flow of fuel into the carb, but it still doesn’t want to completely start. Sometimes it will start for a few seconds and die again. I hope somebody here can help cause this TRX does a lot of work for me in hunting and ice fishing season that I wouldn’t be able to do without it.

Thanks for any input,

RD

my first thought is the carb is dirty , it needs to be cleaned very well ( there are stickies on carb cleaning ) and the fuel tank needs to be clean with fresh fuel or you might recontaminate the carb after cleaning it ----- second thought , stretched timing chain , third thought , low compression

10th digit of the vin is a letter , that letter is code for the year , I have a chart if you are interested in know what year it really is , it can make a difference in parts

Definitely carb needs rebuild. You will need a Shindy rebuild kit, a starter valve and a primer pump.

You can do it yourself for about $125 in parts and supplies or pay a local Honda shop to do it for about $275.

Hope you kept the coil, likely still good.
