New to forum and ATVs in general.

My grandson called to tell me his Honda Recon ES had a problem:icon_ nono2:.Turns out he had ridden out a little way from their house to watch deer. When he started to leave the trans. would not shift to N so he could start.Turned on switch and green light blinks with a slight whirring noise when either up or down buttons were pushed.Switched it off and back on and green light came on solid until I tried to shift it.It then began to blink and still no shift.
Got it towed back to the house and hecked battery voltage. 12.4 volts.Hooked to 1.5amp slow charger which lit the yellow light meaning it was taking charge.
Is a low battery the only problem or should I check elsewhere for him?I feel short trips are robbing the battery more than it is recharging but just guessing at this point.
Thanks to all replies

Welcome I think you’ve started with the most common problem a weak battery. You can also try adjusting the clutch. Very common to be going up thru the gears and then accidentally hit the down button OR shut it off in gear while hot, and it won’t shift afterwards

Thanks for the reply.

My son was off today and got out the manual shifter. He was able to go up through the gears and back down into nuetral. It shifted smoothly but still will not shift with the electrics. Still noisy when trying to shift and won't engage.
He has ordered a repair manual.
Probably moisture related since we had some and and it was outside.

I read an older thread about changing the lube but this transmission shifts easily.

Ok, it sounds like the shift motor and reduction gears & support bearings need to be serviced. Its simple work, but it does take a few hours to complete. You'll need some warm soapy water, some rubbing alcohol, synthetic grease, some basic tools, the service manual and two small alligator clips. There are a couple posts in the following thread showing how to prep the ES system:

Look for any reduction gear bearings that are installed crooked from the factory and correct those if any are found. Let us know how it goes if you can.
