Hello all, I am new to this forum and atv riding in general...
I just bought a 2009 Honda rancher 420 trx420fpa and it is having a weird shifting issue and I was hoping somebody could point me to a easy fix...

It seems to have an issue down shifting, I hear the shift motor trying 3 to 4 times to get down gears and some time it dose go down and I have even seen it over shift past first and into reverse (so the display said) then back to first as you come to a stop... up shifting seems fine I can get up to speed with out issue but when I come to a stop you hear the shift more just click away trying to go down into first...

Also the same problem when in esp mode.. Up shifting is fine but going back down is a struggle..

I have tried manual shifting with that little gear by the shift motor and same issue up no problem BUT down is a struggle...

I have also replaced the angle shift sensor... but that did not help...

Any Thoughts?
Thanks in advance for any assistance:)

update

Just a little update..
Well I decided to replace the oil to see if that helped and what to my surprise..
The previous owner put transmission fluid in instead of oil.... (it was bright red commin out of the drain plug...)

It is shifting better BUT still not perfect...
I gunna run this oil for a little while then put in some good synthetic oil and I am hoping the will bring it back all the way...

If these issues continue try replacing the shift angle sensor. It is about $24 and is located at the left side rear of the engine and very low. It will be helpful if you can get the atv up on a stand or on some kind of work bench. This is just a bolt on part but it is fairly difficult to get to. No real mechanical skills are required but flexibility and a 1/4 drive ratchet with some long extensions will help.

Update

After I put the proper oil in, the shifting got better BUT it still has problems down shifting (the shift motor tries again and again... then the next time it shifts fine, then repeat..) .. up shifting is perfect.. So I replaced the oil again after running it for a few miles and still having the same issue... I have replaced the shift angle sensor and that made no difference at all (assuming I did it right... Just 2 bolts off and 2 bolts on and reconnect the wire... no special alignment)...

Any other thoughts?
