When riding Honda Rancher 2004 model TRX400FGA gear changing is rough and makes a loud noise in both ESP and Auto. It sounds like its grinding. This happens on flat land. Does anyone have any information on this?

Have you changed oils recently or checked levels? If changed, what was the old oil like?

@landt2017 I would check the service manual section for testing oil pressure. Not all "grinding" symptoms in the hondamatics can be traced to oil pressure, but it's the most common culprit.

Yes changed oil and there was too much oil on the dipstick. Drained some out but it looks like its overfilled sometimes. Sometimes it looks like its at the right level.
These 400AT's are finicky in every way, including checking the oil. I've never been able to get consistent results using the Honda method. So what I've found to be most consistent is warm it up, let it sit for a minute, then take off the fill cap and look down in. You should see a bump just down inside, part of the case casting. Have the oil just covering that, but no more than a 1/2" deep.
