As some of you know, I picked up a 2015 Honda Pioneer 500 this Spring and a few weeks ago, someone talked me out of it. Even though I did well on the transaction, I have been on the lookout for another and yesterday found a 2017, camo and worked out a great deal by trading in my recently purchased 2015 Honda Foreman. So, my avatar has changed as well as my signature and will be on the lookout for another ATV, enjoy shopping/trading.....

Here you go, notice in the first picture where on the newer models you can select MT/AT. The MT allows you to paddle shift up/down and AT is the automatic version.

grats !. i will stick with my atvs..sxs's were a big thing years ago, but today ?, well..you need a large trailer to haul them with, trials are not wide enough for them, the cost on upkeep is higher than atvs. if you use them around on a farm ?..they are great !. but other than this ?..i just don't see a need for them, but do enjoy your new toy !!.

Shade.... I will likely buy another ATV because I like them and can’t imagine not owning one. The sxs for me is ideal giving a major part of my needs, carry items to the back forty and generally have a buddy along , so it’s ideal for my application and the 500 is small enough to be nim

We have a JD Gator, well it’s actually belongs to @keithuk Its a fantastic bit of kit, just as you said, can carry a passenger some distance in comfort and dry if it rains and, also the ability to carry equipment and tow a more substantial trailer is very useful.
ATV’s and SxS both have there place and both are very good for there intended uses, goes without saying that we have both. ATV for simple tasks and getting to a paddock to check livestock or what have you, the SxS for more arduous tasks, carrying hay, fixing fence rails and such. Don’t think we’d cope without either if I’m honest, I certainly wouldn’t fancy walking haha.

I want to eventually get a SXS. Would be better for work than my Foreman, but I much prefer a 4wheeler when I'm not trying to haul a bunch of gear.

Do the new 500's still use the Hondamatic? Curious as to whether they've changed the new models to a DCT since they dropped the Hondamatic in 2014 in the Rubicon.

I figure one of these days there will be some cheap trashed Pioneers floating around where I'll be able to afford one.

I would need to look at the manual to know precisely the transmission type, but in AT mode it shift through the gears automatically and what is interesting the unit automatically lets off the acceleration to shift and it downshifts as well. In manual (paddle) you can click up through the gears and when you let off it will down shift automatically for you even in manual mode.

I too enjoy riding a ATV and will get another soon. For my next ATV, I'm leaning towards a CVT, because I take on some nice trail riding and enjoyed the experience on one recently traversing up/down hills and winding trails.

No more hondamatic, The pioneer 500 uses an es foreman motor. Basically ES shifts for you in auto. The 700 uses the Rincon motor and trans with torque converter and my Pioneer 1000 uses a DCT trans.

That sounds like the DCT in the wife's Rancher. It has a shift motor on the front case and shifts when the computer tells it to shift.

I really like the way the Hondamatics ride, I just haven't been able to bring myself to buy something with a non-serviceable $1200 transmission.

I keep my stuff for life most of the time, and sometime down the road, Hondamatics won't be available anymore.

The pioneer 500 isn't a DCT. It is essentially a foreman 500 ES motor. You have paddle shifters (same as es buttons on handlebars) and also the option for "auto" which is just the computer saying (press upshift paddle now). The DCT is a whole different animal from the Hondamatic. The DCT is completely serviceable and is pretty trouble free as long as it isn't filled with mud/water.

Interesting. That would mean the 500 Pioneer is serviceable and actually simpler than the DCT.

The DCT in auto mode has the computer tell the shift motor when to shift, and it has the ES type shift motor on the front of the engine.

It does appear that the Pioneer lacks the dual clutches and the valve body on the front cover.

Didn't realize Honda had done that. I guess hypothetically they could make a DCT auto and a regular "ES Auto" now in an ATV.

This may be a cheap one to consider, https://semo.craigslist.org/snw/d/2015-honda-pioneer/6638168858.html I have no association to the machine and just passing along.....

Well money is tight, and I have at least 5 bikes I need to rebuild to sell, and another 4 I need to rebuild to keep.

I'd really like a 4 seater with a bed, or at least one where the rear seats convert to a bed.

I pulled up the specs on that thing and it's tiny!
