Honda fourtrax 350 1986 starter reduction gear, cover . replacement/install

Replacing the stator, starter, and starter reduction gear and now I can not get the starter reduction gear cover back on properly the top right side gets stuck about an 1/8th inch from being flush against the case? Am I missing something or not lining something up correctly. Already broke the cover so have a new one on order should be here in 2 days but for now I'd like to get some ideas
