Hello everyone, I am new to the forum.

This spring I was looking at buying an atv, when doing research I found out that the older (1987-1995)
Honda Fourtrax 300 4x4 are great reliable machines. Just going to be using it for making trails, and the odd trail ride.

I have a few things to ask:

What to look for when looking at these older machines?

What over all condition should the belly be in?

Thank you for your time, it is greatly appreciated.

They were made from 88 to 2000, all slightly different but look very similar, almost all of the parts are interchangeable.
Remember, if a deal seems to good to be true, it usually is!!
If your in any doubt, post pics on here and fire a few questions out there, lots of help and advice on offer here :)

This machine i'm looking at has all new plastics, used for the odd cottage ride, it was in the family for 15 years, and for sape collecting. Tires are all good, it was just in shop for spring service.

$2500

Thoughts?

I read "What to check before buying an atv" but are there any major things to be aware of on the old honda's?

Thanks

I'm in the UK but I'm pretty sure that's top end price over there. It really would have to be close to showroom condition for that price. I could be wrong of course!
Do you have any pictures?

Howdy howdy.

The Honda 300 was one of the toughest bikes ever to been produced.
New plastic will run you 600 for a set. If it is completely stock, with title and ordinal and everyone works no bad bearings I could see that price but no more than that. Ask anything you want to about these bikes

300's are my favorite , they will take a beating , parts are readily available new , after market and lots of used stuff floating around as the 300 had a long production run with big numbers of ATV's -------- the thing I would look at would be the front and rear end condition and check the frame underneath for being rotted out

personally I'd prefer 95-2000 , the 88-92 had a couple of extra HP on the engines , which you can do to any of the years , but some of the early parts only fit those models and can be harder to find and cost more when you do find it

I agree it looks like a very nice bike.

I will defiantly take a jack when I go look at the bike.

Are these atvs full time 4x4?

I don't have any more pictures of the bike at the moment.

I've heard about the rott so I will be making sure the frame is still in contact.

Thanks again

yes, they are full time 4x4. warn used to make a product called 424 , but they stopped making them, and another company started producing them, I think they are called wide open ?, they do the same thing the 424 does.

My personal experience from being to buy-happy:

Brake panel bearing was scrap which caused the axle to flop about (had to pull everything apart all the way to the swing arm to replace seals/bearings)
No brakes
Dead battery
Kick starter won't work due to worn out one-way bearing
Previous owner "welded" (attempted to) extra brackets on the foot peg which made it impossible to take off the right engine cover. Had to cut out his welds
All shocks were scrap
Muffler was pierced

I didn'T pay much for mine but it was still too much!!

2500$, is that Canadian or US?

If it's Canadian $$ then that is pretty much what they go for up here in mint condition.

Does the full time 4x4 cause more wear and tear?
never had one ?, but I doubt it. all they do is disconnect the front drive shaft to the front differential where is does not operate. the down side when warn made them ?, is the cable to engage the drive shaft would seize up over time.

once I installed the 4x2 kick out kit I found that the full time 4x4 really does choke the engine down , as far as wearing out front drive parts go , the front end shafts and differential will still turn when in 2wd , it is just that no power is being applied ------the 4x2 I think is the best mod to do to a 300 , it makes it ride like a different bike , in 2wd it's turning radius is better , the engine is much more responsive turning just the rear wheels , it is a lot more fun to go as far as you can in 2wd and then lock it in
