Honda Foreman S 450

Unfortunately you can't.. 450S foreman 98 - 04 all share the same display (ES being slightly different) but don't show the gear selected.

Personally I don't see it necessary to know the selected gear as it's pretty simple to know as you go through the gears.

Yeah I hear you, if you've ridden a bike with it you kind of look for it.. Can't be done though unfortunately.

Yes, definitely a worthwhile purchase. Makes a noticeable difference to steering and body fatigue on long trails. Quite simple to install too.
