I don't think adding more gauges will leave you walking back to your truck.....

Tach is a VERY handy tool for tuning. Almost irreplaceable really. It's a lot easier dailing in your fuel map when you know what RPM the engine is at.
You can buy aftermarket Tach's/ rev counters. Check eBayUK out.
I know, I've ran a TinyTach before. But it's a lot easier when it's already there lol

Tiny tach does the same thing but you can hard mount it to the machine. It picks up the signal inductively from the spark plug wire as well. Also has built in hour meter...

I'd ask them to do everything that they are not doing now. More power throughout the entire model range with larger engine options, optional Suspension packages and competitive/convenience features such as power steering and dif locks available for all models that don't currently have them. I'd also like to see sport quads return, most notably the 700xx but Im not holding my breath.... It's a shame that a 250x is now the flagship sport quad from Honda.

why would you need a tach on a semi-automatic motor ?, that's like having it in my automatic transmission in my '00 Silverado ?, freaking useless for the most part.
So you would be fine not having anything other than idiot lights and speedometer on a pickup?

I know I'm not. I use my truck as it was designed. To pull trailers, plow snow, haul my four wheeler. I like to know if my plow is causing it to overheat or draining the battery down. Same thing with the trans temp.

What difference does it make if it had 1 gauge or 10? If a gauge fails it's not like you will be walking home lol

never said anything about the idiots lights ?..I SAID TACH !!..LOL. no automatic tranny should have a tach, unless your stickily working by the book ?. you don't need a tach for an automatic transmission ?..it aleady knows when to shift while in D, correct ?, it also has tow mode, knows when to shift then ?, a tach is worthless on a automatic, heck, I never even used it when I was driving a standard transmission truck ?, if you can't shift gears by ear ?, you don't need to drive a standard !..lol. ever wonder how many truck drivers ( real truck drivers that drive over the road ) use their clutch ??. I know a lot that never touch it, cept when in town ?..lol.

How about a 4wd 700XX with about a 30hp bump in power while using a 5 speed semi auto....
I'd spend the 12-13k that quad would probably cost and I'm sure a lot of CanAm and polaris owners would be willing to make a switch too. Even if it didn't get a bump in power, a 4x4 version would probably weight in at about 560lbs wet. that would be a hell of a quad with 55HP and a 5speed

That's kinda what I was thinking, 600# wet or so, even 650# I could live with. @55hp and a 5 speed it would be pretty comparable to a 70-75hp CVT quad with the difference in power loss through the drivetrain. But, I've never been one to settle for "comparable" lol

If you didn't have a tach on your CVT auto you'd never be able to find out what your shift out RPM is, or your redline, or like I said earlier it's REALLY helpful to know what RPM your at when your trying to make a fuel map. You seem to be fixated on the "fact" that you only need a tach to know when to shift, and is therefore useless with an auto transmission, and that is a ridiculous conclusion to come to IMO.

Have you ever had the speedo fail and had to drive by the tach readings? lol Guess not.....

nope, my speedo's never failed on my trucks..lol. as for what and when to shift on a auto ?. well smart guy...that's what the damn ecm is for !..lol. as I said, unless your working on your truck by the book ?..the freaking tach is useless !. is for me anyway, you want one ?, by all means..get-r-done !, me ?, nope..don't care for that extra crap that servers me no reason for being there, other than taking up space for my idiot lights ?!.lol. and wth has redline got to do with a tach ?, when your shifting by ear and feel !!..lol. wow mac, surely your smarter than this ?!..lol.

Love this string, 1st off I'm like most of you guys honda atv addict all the way, YES disk brakes front n back complete hydrolic ! gauges close station rear axle (for the 300) may e an oil cooler, IMO it's not that important unless you deep ride as fish does, lol grease able upper n lower joints ALL them, would have been nice if honda made there own version of the 424 kick out, n yeah it would be nice for mo power n a bit faster (maybe) in the 70 mph range, lol I'm like MAC lol sometimes i like it fast, lol rear twin adjustable shocks , n adjust fronts couldn't hurt, AND a factory add on cooling fan.

I've owned 5 new Hondas over the years. Never had to walk home! Our trails are a bit rough in the North, so, the top end speed wasn't a factor...40 is about as fast as I need to go. Most the trails keep you in the 20s average wise, pretty rugged country.

#2 I don't often work on my trucks, I have had speed sensors fail, I have had to guess my speed by rpm, which I wouldn't be able to do with no tach. We of course are talking about ATV's, but you keep bringing up your truck sooo?
#3 Yes I do do a lot of things "by the book" I've never used a tach for setting the idle mainly because I prefer to run EFI machines which do not have an adjustable idle speed.

Arguing over how you don't need a tach is foolish, you'll never buy a new Honda anyway, so whether they dedicate 1" of the screen for a RPM readout or not shouldn't make much difference to you. But I tell you what, if Honda ever does start putting tachs on, and you somehow end up getting one, feel free to put a piece of tape over the RPM section and don't forget to come back here and brag to us about how you don't need a tach....

fine, i'll speak of Honda atvs, hows that ?, you will never see Honda put a tach on their atvs , why ?, because they program the shift points into their ecu's..thats why !..lol. in case ya missed it ?, most all newer atvs are controlled by the computer, sensors for the most part, which controls the ecu. again, I don't need a stupid tach for a semi-auto tranny on an atv ?, you may need it ?.as for the redline crap ?..it's built into the ecu rev limiter..no tach needed..lmfao.

As far as tuning goes Mac is right Shady, a tach is very necessary. Take a track car to the dyno and the guy will tell you to take your car home and bring it back when you have one fitted!

Well if an auto truck doesn't need a tach then why does it need all those other gauges?

And being you brought up "real truck drivers". I drive trucks. 8-10 speed mostly but have run a few 18 speeds. 6 wheelers all the way up to 22 wheelers. Starting out in construction you don't get assigned one truck. You get whatever piece junk is left. And that changes daily lol. If any of them tell you they've never used the tach they're full of sh*t. Every truck is different. Different manufactures have higher or lower rpm shift points depending on the torque curve. Sure once you get some miles in it you don't need the tach and can go by ear.

Then there's progressive shifting. Which is used to save fuel while on the way to highway speed by over the road truckers. You need to use the tach for that or else you're defeating the purpose of it. Unless they have a perfectly tuned ear and can tell rpm differences of about 500 rpm lol

And as far as the clutch goes, the reason they don't need a clutch is because they've used the tach to find the the proper shift rpm and then learned the sound from that. I don't need to use the clutch. But if I'm loaded heavy I might. They put it there for a reason. And if it makes easier on the trans then why not use it? When your at about 90k lbs banging gears hard can leave you stranded.

What about some rear view mirrors and flashing hazard lights , so when your stuck in a hole at night you can alert the next rider of your situation and watch them as they approach so you know when to jump off and get out the way = LOL ------ I would bet some would argue cruise control would be good for conserving fuel and anti-thumb fatigue

I could see cruise control having a place. A few farmers I know that spray crops with their wheelers could use it. Most of their equipment/chemicals is calibrated for a certain speed for the output. But for the other 90% using their atvs no they wouldn't need it.

There is only 3 ATV's on the market today that have their transmissions controlled by an ECM, and they are all Honda's.

I don't need a tach, I can get by without one, but much like a gas gauge, coolant temp gauge, speedometer, hour meter etc. they are nice to have.
