hello I need some help wit the chain on new to me 400ex seems like Im missing some parts on the chain area .Could someone post some pics like theese. so I could see what It should look like down theere. Thanks in advance. It is 1999 400ex.

It looks like everything is there. The chain is extremly loose. How does it look on the sprocket side

yes the chain is super loose it had a 15 tooth sprocet on the front it was wore pretty bad. the po gave me new in package 14 tooth. I put it on and havent tightened the chain yet. the smaller sproct put a little hump in the chain the chain isnt straight will it be ok or will that be a problem I pulled the chain tight and there is a slight hump where the chain comes off the front sprocket and goes over the chain guid to the back sprocket

it will over time take out front and rear sprokets but will wear them out faster rule of thumb is when its time tochange one change all like front rear andchain

so if I went with the fourteen front would I need to get one for the back that would be bigger to straiten the chain over the guid

One thing is for sure your missing the case saver. I would look into getting one of those. If your chain snaps the way it is you could crack the one side of the case and thats never fun. There a cheap insurance policy!

I have that piece it was removed to chage the front sprocet

It looks like one of the links in your chain is seized and not moving freely. That's why it's not sitting on the front sprocket like it's supposed to. Your chain is dry and needs to be lubed.

I agree ^^^^^^ The chain is easy to tighten, should only take a few min. to do.

hemut I followed the instructions that ring was hard to mve but I got it to move no change in the chain if anything it is a little looser I pulled back on it towards the back of bike not push forward does this piece look complete or is anything missing.And how much should I have to move that piece to see some change.

I don't think anything is missing. Try loosening those pinch bolts a little more and see if it will move back some more. Your chain may be stretched and you might have to remove a link or two where you went to a smaller front sprocket.

I put the stock 15 back on Iloosed the bolts all the way and pulled it back all I can get it to go it just stops. is it possible the chain can stretch so much that it can no longer be adjusted. I think im going to get a chain and front and rear sprocket. there is one on ebay. A set of all three. Do you know if this is junk or will it be ok thanks.

The carrier does not pull back or foward, it turns. The carrier (you have your fingure on it in the pic.)turns in the swing arm.

yeah I know when you stick a screwdriver in the hole you have to pull on the screwdriver to get it to turn

You may have to get a pair of channel locks to turn it..

Ok cool. I have never heard of the brand of chain that your looking at on ebay, not saying its junk tho. IDK about the 400ex but the 300ex has a stop bolt so the carrier can not spin 360deg.
