wrecked my four wheeler down a hill it fliped multiple times and bent the rear axle so I replaced the axle right off the bat looking closer i bent the frame bars and broke the black ring around the tank. ok I can live with that. but hears my "big" problem. i changed the oil and straned it through a paint filter I got a large piece about a cm long of steel along with a bunch of smaller pieces that were hard to see. it was ran for about 10 min after the wreck before I changed the oil the first time. after I put the new oil in it I ran it lightly for 5 min and checked my dipstick and my oil is black already. I think I have a bad crank and piston rings. And I know its not runing right. will this become a money pit like I think it will be? What shouild i do?

If it has a bad crank it might run into a little money. A bad crank is about the worst thing to happen to one, in my opinion. Not only because of the price of the crank, but it's a pretty big job to put one in, because you have to split the cases.

Do you have any excessive engine noise? and does it smoke? the piece of metel you retrieved will a magnet stick to it? just making sure you didn't by chance pop a piece of the skirt off the piston. the gears are metal when it flipped you were still in gear and when it came down on the rear wheels you could have possibly chipped a tooth in the tranny? you said it's not running right... How is it running? rough lopey missing weak on power?

i'm kinda leaning with trx on this..from the sounds of it..you may have broke a tranny gear tooth..or a piston ring..if a magnet sticks to that peice of metal you got out of it..then it's not your piston skirt..more than likely it's a tranny gear..or a piston ring..hard to tell without looking at it first hand.

I dont know if i would go that far? I mean at the worst its a piece of your crank or a tooth off a gear. Ebay sells many good lightly used parts off newer quads that make it way less expensive than you may think. I got a crank out of a 2006 300ex for $50 and its in and it works fine. I mean it really comes down to what kinda time you think the quads worth. Because it is very time consuming. Cracking the cases on a 300ex is way easy though. Its up to you but i think you will save some money fixing it rather than buying something else. Completely your decission though. And i mean you may pull it apart and find lots of things needing replaced. Mine looked like new in the inside and everything tested in spec. If you do decide to do it get your hands on a manual first off and second dont be afraid to ask any question you may have.

Mooses 250x would but hes got lots of mods. You would hate yourself if you baught a 250ex there way different than a 250x and they are slow and ball less. Your 300ex really isnt a 300cc either though its a 281cc if you have never bored it. How much do you weigh? Cuz if your 300 is having trouble you may want to step up to a 400ex?
