1st gen is 88-92 2nd gen is 93-00. There is no 3rd gen IMO, there was a slight wiring change in 98-00 but in my opinion since both the body and the frame are identical to the 93-97 this does NOT constitute calling the 98-00 models a new "generation".

Big Red 300's were just models sold in the UK at the time. No difference between them and NA models.

Gen1 88-92, Gen2 93-97 & Gen3 98-00. Big Reds here in the UK were Gen1 and Gen2 up until 93/94 then they became the Fourtrax.
Some prefer the Gen1 not because it’s ‘special’ as you say but because it has a little more power response via a cam and cdi.

the only differences I know on 3rd gen 98 -2000 is they did away with a separate alarm box , changed the cdi , head light switch assembly and the wiring harness ------" Big Red " here in the Southern USA was a 1985 era ATC250ES ( 3 wheeler )

We had a 200 fourtrax in the UK, no 200 big red. The big reds here were the ATC250ES and trx300fw, I do know the changeover here from big red to fourtrax was 93/94 so some early Gen2 models are big reds.

Don't remember the 200's being called Big Red and I had one of the first chain driven , no reverse models , think that was an 82 -------- the Big Red was a three wheeler , the ATC250ES , shaft driven and had reverse , and didn't have the shifter level on the side cover , around 85

No the 200M was more of a base model I think this one was 200ES maybe. Can't remember I'd have to look it up when I get to a computer

nice old advertisement ----------- I looked on Partzilla to see what models were available in 82 , looks like the 1982 200A was no reverse and the 1982 EA had reverse , the don't mention a 1982 ES though -------- I had the no reverse version , I hated it , always was having to push it back by hand ------

1988-1992 were 1st gen models
1993-1997 were 2nd gen models **Some 93's had a mix of parts on them**
1998-2000 were 3rd gen models, no change from the 2nd gen except wiring changes IIRC
