Well As you can see this is my first post on the forums. I am new, but not so new to four wheelers, and not new at all to working/riding them. So anyhow, thought i would introduce myself. My name is Tim, I am from Southeast/Central Arkansas, Pine Bluff area, Im a 22 y.o., still in college bout to finish up my degree at the university of arkansas @ Little Rock. Blah blah, ok. Now to the good stuff. Started off riding the old honda 300's. Well i've still got one, but was wrecked a couple years ago, and finally i've got the means to fix it right, and replace the damaged pieces.

As of right now my scooter (trx300fw 99 model) sits on the carport on 2 jack stands with the rear wheels off, axle nuts loose, one hub off, and one castle nut about to be cut off. (got tired, and im gonna go ahead and tackle that tommorow). Might i also side track a bit, and say, i've learned my lesson about four wheelers. You have to be real careful, because it's not some fairtale land out there where people don't get hurt... i ended up with a hole in the back of my head.. Ok so now that i am not a speed demon and quite a bit more responsible, i've got a new perspective on things. Back on topic. The plastic is in bad ruff shape, has a few cracks, but the cracks are being fixed with zip-ties, and some hy-sol my papa is getting from work. Front plastic is off, front rack, back rack, and front bumper is also off. Handlebars are toast, but i already have the new racks and bars. Bent my rear axle, got a dang near bran new one for 100 bucks, and so i think im bout set.

To the nitty gritty. I've always had trouble, like everyone who owns a 300, by getting water contaminants in the rear differential case. So i plan to replace both seals on the outiside of my differential, both seals on the outside of my brack drum, and also the pretty dust cover ring (atleast i think one is there). (correct me if i am wrong). I've checked for slack in rear axle, and there is none there. However, i am taking this bent axle out, and putting a new one in. Finally, i got to thinking some more about where this water was coming from. I know my seals were good the last time i put them in.. atleast i thought they were. So i checked for slack in the sway bar by grabbing the axle (while it was still on stands) and tried rotating the axle (if you're standing at the rear of the wheeler) clockwise. I noticed a considerable amount of slack there. Is this where all this water is seeping down into my differential??? How hard of a job is it to replace these bearings/seals in the sway bar, (if i even need to)(i dont really know if there is supposed to be slack in the sway bar anyway).

So i have alot of questions, but first and foremost if you read only this one sentence, Helmut, you've already been most helpful. Thanks in advance Everyone, the rear axle thread was niiiiiice! Tim.

Welcome to the forums. What part are you calling the sway bar? I'm having trouble figuring out where you're saying the slack is.

according to the diagram perhaps dust seal #22, bearing #21, and holder #13. When these parts fail, can water leak thru these seals/bearings and let water into my rear differential case? If the bearings fail, would they fall back onto my gear set bearings (pinion bearings)??????

Sorry if i am being vague... Still getting the hang of this internet parts/forums thing.

the slack seems to up next to (inside the swingarm).

the slack isnt in the axle or differential but up towards the motor on the left side of the swing arm... atleast thats where i think it is.

right next to or around perhaps the rear drive shaft, next to the frame.

swingarm assembly i think is what it's called. there's room for jiggle/play right there where bearings ^^^^^ (previously mentioned as #21) ride. making the whole rear end a bit loose in a circular motion about the rear drive shaft where that #21 bearing rides... Am i making any sense??

That's the swing arm bearings and seals. Water can't get into the rear diff from there, because there's a seal in the top of the diff, where the driveshaft splines onto the pinion shaft.

They need to be replaced, but if they're not too bad, it shouldn't hurt it if you drive it that way for a little while.

Here is a picture of the oil seal in the diff, where it bolts to the swing arm. When the driveshaft splines onto the pinion shaft, it seals around the driveshaft, so water can't get in.

Understood, and thank you so much for your help! I guess i'll go ahead and replace those boogers while im at it... really there isnt much more to tear down on this bike at the moment, besides complete disassembly.

Thanks for the link, i sure appreciate it!
