Okay, I know this is HF and their stuff isn't (ahem) great quality, but for $49 it fits my budget. I may also get to use a 25% coupon on top of that. Since I don't mud or even ride my atv all that often, it's probably ok for my needs. How would I go about mounting it to my 91 TRX300? I don't have a welder, torch, etc. I'm a bolt on guy. Thoughts?

I have bought SUPERWINCHES NEW on sale for about 10 bucks more?
some time's shopping about before buying can get you a better deal?

a winch is some of them things when you NEED IT, you need it to work?
I know KNOW one when stuck that says they are glad they bought a cheap winch!, or cared how much extra a GOOD one costs them!
but also comes down to where you ride I guess ?
I wouldn't trust a HF winch when better one's are out there and for NOT much more
paying a little more is worth the peace of mind to me Cabeal's and like store run sales on Super winches ALL the time and many time you can use one of there coupons too to get even more off!
MY 2 cents here

Bama'Dan , that winch plate isn't even close to use as a starting point to cut it up and build one to fit your 1st gen bike , as far as I know you are not going to find a pre-fabbed winch plate for a 1st gen 300 , you will have to make it or have it made

I am not a fan of the wireless controller , I seen my buddy almost lose two fingers from one , well stupidity played a big part in that ------- I have had a wireless on my bike and was winching in and it wouldn't stop , had to disconnect the wiring going to the winch

if you plan on using the winch once or twice then I would give the $49 special a shot , 50/50 shot it might work when you need it , but would throw the remote away and get a solenoid and wire it up , so by the time you spend money on that you will be over $100 , so just get a Superwinch or Warn to start with

It wouldn't be hard to find a welding shop who can fabricate a mounting plate for you. But, it sounds like you are on a budget, so that may push you out of the price range, to begin with.
Saying that, what is your vision for winch usage? If it is just an "I may need something to get out one day", but you otherwise won't ever use it, then don't sweat it. I have had a winch on my 300 for years, and never had to use it- that's because where I ride, I'm not in situations where it's an issue. If something did happen, I'd be able to walk out and come back with a come-along and get it out.
In my area, for most situations, a winch is on every atv, but few are ever unspooled. They are used more for lifting a plow, than winching out.
So, what I'm getting at is you need to decide, since money is tight, if it is a need or a want. You may decide that you don't need to spend any money on it.
A side consideration- the HF winch may work perfectly fine, if you never, or almost never, need it. In that case, mounting it is going to be your biggest expense.

I'll never be able to talk myself into a HF winch. Friend of mine did though.

It was probably 4 years back. He mounted it on his sidexside and has plowed his steep 100 yard long drive with it since. I'd guess we've had 20 snows (or so) of any significance in that time. His winch still works.

As to problems; right away, he had fraying on the cable. He bought HF's kevlar line and fairlead. As I said, he's been GTG since.

I'd buy the Warn. Lifetime support and parts availability trump cheap IMHO.

If someone gave me a HF, I might run it on the rear as a backup to the warn...out of curiosity. BUT, there is that support thing. AND the Warns rep for dependability should things ever get hairy on you

Thanks guys. I'll pass on the HF the superwinch for $20 more sounds better. It actually sounds like my biggest challenge will be mounting. I'm thinking it would be a "I might need this one day" purchase, but if I'm stuck and need it I want it to work. However, if I have one, I'll probably find other uses for it.

pretty sure superwinch is life time too on most parts, and there support IMO is second to NONE
I had a switch go bad, contacted them at about 5 pm a major snow storm coming next day and they had me a FREE NEW switch shipped to me for 9 am the following day BEFORE the storm hit, I call that awesome service! and NO clue what could be better~

and if all your using winch for is plowing, its a LOT less of a worry about it failing than if your in the back woods some place and stuck
at home in the driveway, you can get help or?? pretty easy to resolve issue's

I have had one on an Argo for three years. Used it to pull several other 4 wheelers, especially side by sides, out of thick mud. Works everytime.
I have a Warn on my Foreman 500. It's let me down twice. A lot of electrical issues with the toggle and replacement toggle.
If you haven't actually tried the Badlands winches, might want to give them a try before assuming. The synthetic line is great too.
