Rotational-Inertia effects on power.

No secret ... I like the OEM Honda rims. Good design, fit, quality, and in my opinion - they look good.

The 450 Foreman ('98-'04) is no powerhouse. It's actually 433cc ....
To put larger tires/wheels, and widen the 'track' with spacers/incorrect offset aftermarket rims .... will effect the performance of your 'bone stock' 450 Foreman.

In the above link, they state that 1lb. of tire weight (above stock) is the equivalent of adding 2lbs. of sprung weight.
They also state that 1lb. of wheel weight is the equivalent of 1.6lbs. of sprung weight.

As an example from my 450 Foreman ...
Stock OEM front tire/wheel ...... 24lbs.
Stock OEM rear tire/wheel ....... 27lbs.

Delta Steel wheels/Bear Claw EVO 26 x 9-12 front, and 26 x 11-12 rear.

Front ... 36lbs. Wheel is 5lbs. heavier/tire is 7lbs. heavier = 22lbs. per wheel x2 = 44lbs. sprung weight.

Rear with the Delta Steel / Bear Claw combination ...
Rear ... 42lbs. Wheel is 3lbs. heavier/tire is 12lbs. heavier = 28.8lbs. per wheel x2 = 57.6lbs. of sprung weight.

44lbs. front.
57.6lbs rear
102lbs. equivalent weight on racks.

Also a consideration is the change of final drive ratios with a taller tire like the Bear claws ...

Sorry for all the boring numbers .... the 'seat of the pants' feel is more like a toddler with a loaded diaper ...

I agree with you, when you go taller, wider or just plain heavier, there is a ILL effect that goes on
many just turn a blind eye to it and say its still GOOD ENOUGH, and live with things
I have always said, I know NO one that says when they get there NEW Honda ATV, that is has TOO MUCH HP
never heard that even once, or even TOO much power period
and then everyone seems to go to taller tires and then says, STILL have lots of power LOL
that math never adds up to me!

I stick with OEM spec and all terrain tires because we use the quads for light snow removal about 2x a month, have lots of ice and packed snow and typically ride gravel and firm sod. We have wetlands but small enough to avoid. Rangeland with widespread cactus. Tires with lots of contact surface and small lugs (like Kenda Bear Claws, Mud Lites) will self-clean the cacti. USA made preferred

OEM spec helps keep the CG low–always a few inexperienced riders in my shop even though we get ASI training.

Great bit of technical explanation that. I've just this past wk replaced the front tyres on a TRX450 (98) which I've been refurbishing over the last few months. Ditched the worn out old Goodyear Mud Trackers & fitted some extremely reasonably priced Duro's. The one thing that was immediately apparent was the incredible difference in weight! The Duro's were so much lighter, quite amazing difference to be honest. I can only imagine there'll be a noticeable improvement riding off road.

Weight and diameter absorb power at an alarming rate, it’s almost unbelievable actually! You did good with the duro’s there a good tyre, got them on a Gator and there holding up well so far. Did you go bigger or stay the same size?

Stayed the same size mate. She's an old girl now & until I start doing some serious testing following the work I've done to date, I'm unsure what state the transmission, clutch & final drives will be in? I believe they're healthy, no immediate reason to doubt, but fitting oversize tyres, effectively up-gearing, I don't think I'll be achieving much in doing so. Please take a look at the project photo album I uploaded (foreman forum)

Ahh ok. I’ll take a look, start a project thread up on here under the suitable sub section, we get quite a lot of build threads, always good to go back through for yourself and others who are in need of help. We get the added bonus of pictures in build threads too, we all like pictures here lol.

Just uploaded an album to my profile on here so hopefully people will find some interest in what I've been doing. New battery due in tomorrow so I'll be starting rolling testing within the coming days. Huge benefit having a wksp business on a farm & being allowed access to the fields thanks to the friendly farmer/landlord. Can't wait to see how she goes?

Looks good so far. Is the front bumper bent or is it the angle the photo is taken at? Also, what did you do with your old tyres? The front ones don’t look to bad, we’re the rears bald?
I should think being ex military that it’s been serviced regularly, they keep on top of maintenance schedules quite well I’ve been told.

Old tyres are here if you want them, no further use to me. Yes the front carrier & cradle were badly damaged some time in its service life. It had definitely rolled & significant damage had resulted. It took the best part of a day to straighten the entire assembly to get it fitting nicely. The fender & surrounding panels had all been damaged. Handle bar has now been replaced as well as the switch gear, handle grips & bar ends. I've had to do a fair bit of plastic welding which has worked out very well indeed. I've spent about £1200 in parts over the past four months, slowly going over every part of the vehicle. So you can appreciate its not been a half hearted job. With regards your comment on military service schedules, I've been an Army reservist for the last 17yrs (REME) & unfortunately the Corps isn't what it used to be! Huge numbers of skilled tradesmen have left in the recent past leaving untold amounts of outstanding work not getting fixed by anyone. I'll explain more when I see you mate.
