I’ve been offered a Trx 500 2008 it is a selectable 2WD-4WD manual gear shift.
But it doesn’t engage into 4WD.
Is there a common fault with that model?
Is it an easy fix or walk away and not bother with the purchase?
Not interested in having to rebuild a gearbox etc

I wouldn't let that scare me off if the rest of the bike is good and the selling price is fair. It might be something as simple as a watered harness plug or a switch or a speed sensor. You can test the selectable clutch (when you go look at the bike) by applying battery voltage (+12 volts) to it using jumper wires after unplugging the clutch harness from the main wiring harness. If you hear a faint click and the front differential engages when you put voltage to it, you'll know the pricy-est parts are probably OK. Check the selectable system out in the service manual before you buy, so you'll be familiar with it when you get there.

you see number 17 in this pic , it is a magnet that engages a collar to couple the front pinion and the drive shaft , there are sensors and electrical components between that shifter solenoid and the switch , so it could be a lot of things causing the problem , what I would do , as this 500 is just like my 450 as far as the front diff solenoid goes , I would get all four wheels off the ground , use a test light at the wires going to the solenoid and see if there is voltage making it down to to , could be the coupler stripped or the solenoid bad , if that doesn't find the problem , I would use a manual and back track the wiring till I found the problem which could be a speed sensor , switch , wire broke ,
